When Is Easter?

Easter 2027 falls on Sunday, March 28.

Easter is the movable anchor of the Western calendar: Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday can fall anywhere between 22 March and 25 April. Twenty-four of the calendars on this site give at least one gazetted day off around it β€” the widest coverage of any festival we publish β€” and they disagree about which days: 19 close on Good Friday, 15 on the Monday (South Africa’s law names it Family Day), and only Italy, Indonesia, the Netherlands and Sweden gazette Easter Sunday itself. Every date in the tables below comes from that country’s own official list.

Why the date moves β€” and why it moves the same way everywhere

Easter is not printed in a table, it is computed: the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the ecclesiastical spring equinox, which the church fixed at 21 March regardless of the real astronomy. That rule confines Easter Sunday to a 35-day window between 22 March and 25 April. Good Friday sits exactly two days before the Sunday and Easter Monday exactly one day after, so the whole block slides together: 5 April in 2026, an early 28 March in 2027, 16 April in 2028 β€” each taken from the official lists on our country pages.

Because a single computus serves the whole system, Easter has no meridian split of the kind that can move Lunar New Year: every country in our tables observes the same Sunday. What differs from place to place is not when the festival is, but which days around it a government actually closes β€” and that is the comparison the rest of this page makes.

Good Friday countries, Easter Monday countries

What looks like one holiday is really five habits. Friday and Monday, with the weekend in between: Germany, the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Nigeria and South Africa β€” whose law calls the Monday Family Day. That seven-country core is what a β€œfour-day Easter weekend” means, and in Asia Hong Kong runs the same pattern with an extra gazetted Easter Saturday between the two, while Macau keeps Friday and Holy Saturday. The Friday-only habit closes the country on the cross and sends everyone back to work on the Monday: Canada, India, Singapore, Spain and Brazil. The third habit keeps the Sunday itself: Italy gazettes Easter Sunday and Pasquetta, the Monday after; Indonesia pairs Friday with the Sunday; and the Netherlands is the only calendar that closes all three days. France, Belgium and Ireland keep only the Monday. And the Philippines, alone, closes the whole Triduum β€” Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday β€” without ever gazetting Easter Sunday.

The exceptions are the most useful rows. Ireland is the Catholic country where Good Friday is not a public holiday at all β€” banks shut, offices drift out, but the legal entitlement is only the Monday. Scotland drops Easter Monday while the rest of Britain keeps it. Spain fixes just one national day and lets the regions pad the Holy Week. And in India Easter Sunday appears on the restricted-holiday list, where each government employee elects individual leave β€” the office stays open, which is why it never appears in the day counts above.

Planning around Easter

Easter is the busiest long-weekend of the European and Oceanian year, and an early one β€” like 2027, when the Sunday falls on 28 March β€” pulls that peak into late March. Governments and schools close on the gazetted days; the Thursday before and the Tuesday after are the classic bridge days, where a single day of paid leave stretches a three- or four-day break to five. If you are coordinating offices across Frankfurt, London, Paris and Singapore, the binding constraint is the union of the closures: Germany and the UK lose Friday and Monday, France only the Monday, Singapore only the Friday β€” leaving Wednesday and Thursday as the only two days that every one of those offices is open.

Frequently asked questions

What date is Easter in 2026 and 2027?

Easter Sunday 2026 falls on Sunday 5 April, with Good Friday on 3 April and Easter Monday on 6 April. Easter 2027 comes early: Sunday 28 March, with Good Friday on Friday 26 March and Easter Monday on Monday 29 March. The year-by-year table above lists every published year.

Is Easter Monday a public holiday?

In 15 of the calendars on this site, yes: the United Kingdom (except Scotland), Ireland, France, Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Italy, Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Nigeria, Hong Kong, Austria, Sweden β€” and South Africa, whose law names the day Family Day. In the rest of our coverage β€” the United States, Brazil, Spain, Singapore, the Philippines, Argentina, China, Japan, Thailand β€” Easter Monday is not a public holiday.

Is Easter a public holiday in China, Japan or Thailand?

No β€” China, Japan and Thailand do not list any Easter days among their public holidays, so the festival falls in an ordinary working week there. The Asian places in our coverage that do take Easter days off are Hong Kong, Macau, Singapore, the Philippines, Indonesia and India.

Is Good Friday a public holiday in 2027?

Good Friday 2027 falls on Friday 26 March, and it is a public holiday in 19 of the calendars we publish β€” including the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, Germany, Spain, Brazil, Argentina, Sweden, India, Singapore, the Philippines, Hong Kong and Macau. It is not one in Ireland, Belgium, Italy or Austria, and in France only in Alsace-Moselle.

Why does Easter fall on a different date every year?

Easter Sunday is the first Sunday after the first full moon on or after the church’s fixed spring equinox of 21 March. That rule places Easter anywhere between 22 March and 25 April. Good Friday and Easter Monday are welded to it β€” two days before, one day after β€” so the whole block moves together each year.

Is Easter Sunday itself a public holiday?

In only three of our calendars: Italy, Indonesia and the Netherlands. Everywhere else the Sunday is simply the weekend β€” which is why a country like the United Kingdom counts its break Friday to Monday, while Italy’s runs Sunday to Monday.

Which country gets the longest Easter break?

By gazetted days, three places give three: the Netherlands (Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday β€” four calendar days off counting the weekend) and the Philippines (Maundy Thursday, Good Friday and Black Saturday), while Hong Kong couples Friday and Monday with a gazetted Saturday in between. In 2026 Hong Kong’s block ran five consecutive days, 3 to 7 April, after a Ching Ming substitute landed on Easter Monday and an extra day was gazetted beside it.

How do I add the Easter dates to my calendar?

Each country’s holiday page on this site offers a free ICS and CSV download built from exactly the days in the tables above; importing it into Google, Apple or Outlook Calendar puts every Good Friday, Easter Sunday and Easter Monday in, and subscribing to the ICS URL keeps it updated as governments publish new years.
