Austria’s 13 statutory holidays are the same in 2028 as every year — and 2028 is a very good year to work here. Only New Year’s Day (Sat 1 January) is lost, because Austrian law has no substitute day; the other twelve all fall on a weekday. Four of them are Thursdays (Epiphany 6 January, Ascension 25 May, Corpus Christi 15 June, Nationalfeiertag 26 October) and one is a Tuesday (Assumption 15 August), so five separate single days of Urlaub each produce a four-day break. Christmas (Mon 25 and Tue 26 December) closes the year with the longest natural stretch.

Karfreitag: not on the calendar, not in the export
Good Friday is deliberately kept out of the holiday table above. It was removed as a statutory work-free day by BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019 (the paragraph that used to cover it, § 7 Abs. 3 ARG, was repealed effective 22 March 2019), and it is not in § 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957. Today it survives only as a confessional exemption at school and as a “quiet holiday” under some Länder event laws. Because the table feeds the ICS/CSV/PDF downloads, adding it here would put a working day into your real calendar.

Thirteen federal holidays — and no state holidays at all
§ 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957 (BGBl. Nr. 153/1957) fixes one closed list of 13 days for the entire federation, and § 7 Abs. 2 of the Arbeitsruhegesetz (ARG) repeats it for labour law. Austrian Länder cannot create an additional work-free public holiday for private-sector employees, so there is no Austrian equivalent of a Bavarian or Saxon extra day: 13 is the number everywhere, from Vienna to Burgenland.
What the Länder do have are patron-saint festival days, and the Federal Ministry of Education lists them under “schulfrei” — days when schools are shut, not days when work stops: St Joseph (19 March) in Kärnten, Steiermark, Tirol and Vorarlberg; St Florian (4 May) in Oberösterreich; St Rupert (24 September) in Salzburg; St Martin (11 November) in Burgenland; and St Leopold (15 November) in Niederösterreich and Vienna. In 2028 only two of them touch a weekday at all: St Florian falls on a Thursday and St Leopold on a Wednesday, while 19 March and 24 September are Sundays and 11 November a Saturday. Shops, offices and transport run normally on every one of these dates.
Two dates you will see on aggregator sites are not holidays and are not published here. The Kärnten “plebiscite day” of 10 October is absent from every official list we checked: it does not appear in § 1 Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957, nor in the ministry’s school-closure list, nor in the cross-check APIs we compare against. And 2 November (All Souls / Allerseelentag) is a school-closure day in the ministry’s list but has never been a work-free public holiday — if you work in Austria, it is a Wednesday like any other.
No substitute days: 2028 loses only New Year’s Day
Austria has neither the British “next Monday” rule nor the Japanese substitute holiday. If a public holiday lands on a Sunday, § 7 Abs. 7 ARG simply applies the ordinary Sunday-rest rules, and § 2 Abs. 4 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz switches off the extra protections — you do not get another day. A Saturday holiday is just as unrecoverable for a normal five-day week. In 2028 exactly one holiday is affected: New Year’s Day on Saturday 1 January. Twelve of the thirteen are real days off, which is close to a best case.
Pay is not affected either way: § 9 ARG keeps the holiday wage for work that the holiday cancels, so a Saturday or Sunday holiday costs you no money — only the day. That is why Austrians read a year’s holiday calendar by weekday first and by name second.
Fenstertage 2028: five bridge days, five four-day breaks
A Fenstertag (“window day”) is the working day that sits between a holiday and the weekend, filled with Urlaub. 2028 offers five of them and they are spread across the year: Friday 7 January (after Epiphany), Friday 26 May (after Ascension), Friday 16 June (after Corpus Christi), Monday 14 August (before the Assumption) and Friday 27 October (after the Nationalfeiertag). One vacation day each, four calendar days off every time — five leave days in total would cover them all.
The free three-day weekends are separate and cost nothing: Easter Monday (17 April), Republic Day (1 May), Whit Monday (5 June), the Friday Immaculate Conception (8 December) and the Monday-to-Tuesday Christmas block (25–26 December), which is the longest natural break of the year at four days. Stack the Friday after Ascension on top and five four-day breaks line up across the year; the late-May and mid-June ones are the weeks to reserve earliest.

Is Good Friday a public holiday in Austria in 2028?
No. Good Friday 2028 falls on April 14 and is a normal working day. It was Austria’s only denominational holiday until the reform in BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019 removed it (§ 7 Abs. 3 ARG repealed; § 33a Abs. 28 ARG voids collective-agreement special rules for it). In its place, § 7a ARG lets every worker unilaterally name one vacation day per year as a persönlichen Feiertag, in writing three months ahead — which is how you would build the four-day Easter.
Why is 2028 a better holiday year for employees than 2027?
The list is identical — what differs is the weekday pattern. In 2027 four holidays fell on a weekend (1 May, 15 August, 25 and 26 December) and were lost outright; in 2028 only New Year’s Day does. 2028 also puts four holidays on Thursdays and the Nationalfeiertag with them, which makes it the most Fenstertag-friendly of the four years covered here.
Which is the best day to take leave in Austria in 2028?
Friday 26 May, the day after Ascension Day (Thu 25 May): one vacation day yields a Thursday-to-Sunday break — our top pick for the year. The other four are Friday 7 January, Friday 16 June, Monday 14 August and Friday 27 October. Are there regional holidays in Austria that only apply in one Bundesland?
Not as work-free public holidays. The patron-saint days (19 March, 4 May, 24 September, 11 November, 15 November) appear in the Federal Ministry of Education’s list of days when schools are shut and in Länder practice, but they are not in the federal holiday statute, so businesses, offices and transport run normally. They are listed here as information, not as days off — and in 2028 three of the five fall on a weekend anyway.
Can Austrian public holidays change after a year is published?
In practice no. Nine of the thirteen are fixed calendar dates and four are computed from Easter (Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi), so the 2028 calendar is fully determined today and needs no annual government notice — that is why this page carries confirmed status.
