UK Long Weekends 2027

Scotland diverges the most. It does not observe Easter Monday, so the four-day Easter break shrinks to three days (Good Friday, Mar 26, into the weekend). It adds 2nd January, which in 2027 falls on a Saturday and is observed on Monday January 4 — turning the New Year break into four days rather than three. Its summer bank holiday is on the first Monday of August (Jul 31 – Aug 2), four weeks earlier than the English one, and St Andrew’s Day on Tuesday November 30 adds a day that needs a Monday of leave to become a break.

Northern Ireland keeps the England and Wales list and adds two of its own: St Patrick’s Day on Wednesday March 17, which sits mid-week in 2027 and produces nothing by itself, and the Battle of the Boyne (Orangemen’s Day) on Monday July 12, which delivers a clean three-day weekend from July 10 that neither Great Britain nor Ireland shares. So the 2027 count is six in England and Wales, six in Scotland on a different pattern, and seven in Northern Ireland.

This surprises almost every visitor and quite a few residents. There is no statutory right in the UK to paid leave on a bank holiday. Whether you get the day off, and whether it is paid, depends entirely on your employment contract. Many employers include bank holidays within the statutory minimum of 28 days of annual leave — so a worker on the legal minimum who takes all eight English bank holidays has only 20 days of discretionary leave left.

On the ground, the practical effect is mild: apart from Christmas Day, most shops, museums and restaurants open normally on bank holidays. Rail is the thing to check — trains run to a Sunday timetable and engineering works are deliberately scheduled into bank holiday weekends. December 25 is the one genuine shutdown, when National Rail and the London Underground stop running entirely, and in 2027 the closure effectively extends across December 25–28 because of the two substitute days.
