Sweden keeps 13 statutory red days (röda dagar) fixed by the Act on Public Holidays (Lag [1989:253]). 2027 is the weakest of the four years around it: eight red days fall on a Saturday or Sunday — including Christmas Day and the Second Day of Christmas — and, because Sweden has no substitute-day rule, they give no extra weekday off. Only five red days land on a weekday in 2027. Two dates still follow a "nearest Saturday" rule: Midsummer Day (Saturday June 26) and All Saints’ Day (Saturday November 6).

How Sweden’s red days are decided — and why 2027 is a weak year
Sweden does not publish a new holiday list each year. The 13 red days are fixed permanently by the Act on Public Holidays (Lag [1989:253]), and any future calendar can be computed in advance from two building blocks: fixed dates (New Year’s Day, Epiphany on January 6, May Day, National Day on June 6, Christmas and the day after) and feasts counted from Easter (Good Friday, Easter Sunday, Easter Monday, Ascension on the sixth Thursday after Easter, Pentecost on the seventh Sunday).
There is no substitute-day rule, and 2027 shows exactly how much it costs. Eight of the thirteen red days fall on a weekend — May Day (Sat), Easter Sunday, Pentecost (both Sun), National Day (Sun), Midsummer Day (Sat), All Saints’ Day (Sat), Christmas Day (Sat) and the Second Day of Christmas (Sun). A Monday-to-Friday worker gets none of them back. Only five red days actually add a weekday off: New Year’s Day (Fri), Epiphany (Wed), Good Friday (Fri), Easter Monday (Mon) and Ascension (Thu). HR teams and travellers should plan 2027 accordingly.
The two "nearest Saturday" rules: Midsummer and All Saints
Two Swedish holidays are pinned to a Saturday on purpose. Midsummer Day (Midsommardagen) is the Saturday falling between June 20 and 26 — in 2027, June 26, the latest it can be. All Saints’ Day (Alla helgons dag) is the Saturday between October 31 and November 6 — in 2027, November 6, again the latest allowed. Because both are always on Saturdays, they never add a weekday off; the rule exists to place Sweden’s biggest folk festivals firmly on a weekend.
Eves that are not red days (but nearly everyone is off)
Six evenings here are observances, not legal red days. Midsummer’s Eve, Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve run so deep in Swedish life that the Annual Leave Act counts them as Sundays when deducting holiday days, and most workplaces close. In 2027 all three happen to fall on a Friday (June 25, December 24, December 31) — so even though they are not red days, they behave like a real extra day off for nearly everyone. Easter Eve, Walpurgis Night (Valborg, Friday April 30) and Twelfth Night Eve (Tuesday January 5) round out the list. They are kept out of the main table and the ICS/CSV/PDF downloads so those files list only the days the law truly closes — the distinction competitors often miss.

Does Sweden give a substitute day when a holiday falls on a weekend?
No. The Act on Public Holidays explicitly keeps these days red "even when they do not fall on a Sunday." In 2027 this is brutal: Christmas Day (Saturday) and the Second Day of Christmas (Sunday), National Day (Sunday), May Day (Saturday), Midsummer Day (Saturday) and All Saints’ Day (Saturday) all add nothing to your year.
When is Midsummer and All Saints’ Day in 2027?
Midsummer Day is Saturday, June 26 — the latest Saturday allowed by the June 20–26 window — and All Saints’ Day is Saturday, November 6, also the latest permitted by the October 31–November 6 window. In 2027 both rules push to the very end of their range.
Why does Christmas 2027 look so strange in Sweden?
Because Christmas Day (Saturday December 25) and the Second Day (Sunday December 26) both fall on the weekend, and Sweden has no substitute. Is Valborgsmässoafton (April 30) a public holiday in Sweden?
