How Nigerian public holidays are declared
Nigeria's holidays are declared by the Federal Government through the Ministry of Interior. Six dates are fixed — New Year's Day (Jan 1), Workers' Day (May 1), Democracy Day (Jun 12), Independence Day (Oct 1), Christmas Day (Dec 25) and Boxing Day (Dec 26) — and Good Friday plus Easter Monday follow the Christian calendar. The three Islamic holidays (Eid-el-Fitr, Eid-el-Kabir, Eid-el-Maulud) move by the moon: the Sultan of Sokoto announces the start of each Hijri month, and the Ministry of Interior then declares the public holidays. Until that happens, Islamic dates are projections and can shift by one day.
Nigeria has no statutory substitute-day rule, so in 2027 Workers' Day (Saturday 1 May), Democracy Day (Saturday 12 June), Christmas Day (Saturday 25 December) and Boxing Day (Sunday 26 December) are listed on their nominal dates. The Federal Government occasionally adds extra days ad hoc — for example it declared Monday 2 January 2023 after New Year's Day fell on a Sunday — so watch for official announcements closer to each date.
