General holidays vs statutory holidays in Hong Kong
Hong Kong runs two holiday lists. General holidays (gazetted by the Government, 17 in 2027) are observed by banks, schools, the public sector and most offices. Statutory holidays (set by the Employment Ordinance, 15 in 2027) are the legal minimum every employee is entitled to.
The two lists keep converging. Easter Monday, added as a statutory holiday from 2026, remains statutory in 2027, so only Good Friday and the day following Good Friday now separate the general list from the statutory one.
Lunar New Year needs a substitute in 2027: because the second day (Feb 7) falls on a Sunday, the fourth day (Feb 9) is designated as a holiday in substitution. For the year-end, employers choose between the Winter Solstice (Dec 22) and Christmas Day (Dec 25) as the statutory holiday.
