Of these, 10 are "obligatory" (mandatory) holidays guaranteed to every employee by the Labour Relations Law — New Year's Day, the first three days of Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Labour Day, the day after Mid-Autumn, National Day, Chong Yeung and SAR Establishment Day.
The other 10 public holidays — including Good Friday, Buddha's Birthday, Christmas and the Immaculate Conception — are observed by the government and most of the public, but are not part of the mandatory minimum for private-sector workers. When an obligatory holiday falls on a rest day, public-sector staff receive an additional compensatory day.
