General holidays vs statutory holidays in Hong Kong

Hong Kong runs two holiday lists. General holidays (gazetted by the Government, 17 in 2026) are observed by banks, schools, the public sector and most offices. Statutory holidays (set by the Employment Ordinance, 15 in 2026) are the legal minimum every employee is entitled to.

The two lists have been converging. From 2026 Easter Monday is added as a statutory holiday for the first time, narrowing the historical gap between the two sets.

For the year-end holiday, employers choose between the Winter Solstice (Dec 22) and Christmas Day (Dec 25) as the statutory holiday, while general-holiday observers get Christmas and Boxing Day.

Why does the year-end statutory holiday say "Winter Solstice or Christmas"?+

Under the Employment Ordinance the employer chooses one statutory holiday at year-end: either the Winter Solstice (Dec 22, 2026) or Christmas Day (Dec 25). It is the employer's option, not both. General-holiday observers, by contrast, get both Christmas and the first weekday after it.

What happens when a Hong Kong holiday falls on a Sunday?+

The holiday is moved to the next available day in substitution. In 2026 Ching Ming (Apr 5), the Buddha's Birthday (May 24) and Chung Yeung (Oct 18) all fall on Sundays, so the following day is taken as the holiday instead.
