Singapore's 11 gazetted public holidays are drawn from its four main communities: Chinese (Chinese New Year), Muslim (Hari Raya Puasa and Hari Raya Haji), Hindu (Deepavali) and Christian (Good Friday, Christmas), alongside secular days like New Year's Day, Labour Day and National Day.
The Muslim and Hindu holidays follow lunar calendars, so Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji and Deepavali shift by roughly 10–11 days each year and are confirmed by the relevant religious authorities.
The Sunday-to-Monday holiday rule
When a Singapore public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday becomes a public holiday in its place. There is no equivalent rule for Saturdays — so in 2025, National Day (Aug 9) and Hari Raya Haji (Jun 7) fall on a Saturday and are not extended, which is why 2025 has fewer in-lieu Mondays than a typical year.
