How Many Working Days? Business-Day Counts by Country

We walk every date from 1 January to 31 December. Monday-to-Friday dates count as working days unless they appear on the official public holiday list, multi-day holiday blocks are expanded day by day, and weekend dates the government has designated as make-up workdays are counted back in as working days.

Because they assume every Saturday and Sunday is a day off. China (and Taiwan and Vietnam) extend holidays by converting nearby weekends into official working days, so a generic calculator undercounts by roughly five to seven days a year.

By default yes — Saturday and Sunday are non-working. The exception is a weekend date the government has officially declared a make-up workday, which we count as a working day and list explicitly on the country page.

No. Only nationwide statutory holidays are counted. Places with heavy state-level variation — Australia, Malaysia, India, Canada — will have a slightly lower working-day count in any given state or province.

Multiply the working-day count by your standard day length. On an 8-hour day, a typical year of about 250 working days comes to roughly 2,000 hours; each country page shows the exact figure for that year.

It changes year to year, because it depends on how many holidays fall on a weekend. The table above ranks every country we cover for each published year — countries with make-up workdays often top it, since they trade weekends for longer breaks rather than adding days off.
