Federal statutory holidays vs provincial holidays
Canada does not have a single national holiday list. The federal government sets statutory ("general") holidays under the Canada Labour Code, which apply to federally regulated industries such as banks, airlines, telecoms and the public service — nationwide. Everyone else follows the employment standards of their province or territory.
This is why the "number of stat holidays" depends on where you work. Some federal holidays — Remembrance Day, the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation and Boxing Day — are not statutory holidays in every province. When a holiday falls on a weekend, most jurisdictions grant a substitute day off on the following Monday.
Provincial differences: Family Day, Civic Holiday and more
Family Day is a provincial holiday on the third Monday of February (Feb 17, 2025) in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick; Manitoba calls it Louis Riel Day and Nova Scotia calls it Heritage Day. Quebec's National Holiday (Saint-Jean-Baptiste Day) is June 24.
The Civic Holiday on the first Monday of August (Aug 4, 2025) is observed in most provinces under local names — Terry Fox Day (Manitoba), Natal Day (Nova Scotia), Heritage Day (Alberta) or simply the August long weekend. It is not a statutory holiday everywhere. Always check the rules for your province or territory.
