Obligatory holidays vs public holidays in Macau
Macau publishes 20 public holidays a year under Executive Order No. 60/2000. Of these, 10 are obligatory (mandatory) holidays guaranteed to every employee by the Labour Relations Law — New Year's Day, the first three days of Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Labour Day, the day after Mid-Autumn, National Day, Chong Yeung and SAR Establishment Day.
The other 10 public holidays — including Good Friday, Buddha's Birthday, Christmas and the Immaculate Conception — are observed by the government and most of the public, but are not part of the mandatory minimum for private-sector workers. When an obligatory holiday falls on a rest day, public-sector staff receive an additional compensatory day.
Compensatory rest days and half-day exemptions in 2027
The 2027 Chief Executive order, published on the Macao SAR Government Portal, confirms six compensatory rest days (補假) for public administration staff when a public holiday falls on a weekend: Feb 9–10 (Lunar New Year), Mar 29 (Easter Saturday), May 3 (Labour Day), Oct 4 (National Day) and Dec 27 (Christmas).
The same notice also grants public administration staff a half-day exemption from work on the afternoon of Feb 5 (Lunar New Year Eve) and Dec 31 (New Year's Eve). Private-sector employers are not automatically bound by compensatory days or half-day exemptions — many follow the government calendar, but check your own company's arrangement.
