Cuti bersama: who actually gets the day off?
Indonesia runs a two-tier system. The 17 national holidays (libur nasional) are days off for everyone. The 8 cuti bersama days are government-designated collective leave that bridges holidays into longer breaks: for civil servants they are mandatory and do not reduce annual leave; for private-sector employees they are optional — each company decides whether to observe them, and if it does, the days are commonly deducted from annual leave. Check your employment contract before booking Lebaran travel.
Also note what Indonesia does NOT have: substitute holidays. When a national holiday falls on a weekend — like Idul Fitri (Sat–Sun) or Waisak (Sun) in 2026 — there is no Monday in lieu. The cuti bersama days around them are the compensation mechanism.
Traveling to Bali? Mind Nyepi and Galungan
Nyepi (Mar 19, 2026) is unlike any other holiday in Asia: for 24 hours from 6am, the entire island of Bali stops. Ngurah Rai Airport closes (440 flights suspended in 2026), roads empty, and everyone — tourists included — must stay inside their hotel with lights dimmed. Book flights around Mar 18–20 carefully, and treat the hotel day as a rare digital-detox experience.
Galungan (Jun 17) and Kuningan (Jun 27) are Bali-specific observances on the 210-day Pawukon calendar — the island stays open, but local businesses slow down and temple traffic spikes. Unusually, 2026 has only one Galungan cycle; 2027 will have two (January and August).

What happens in Bali during Nyepi 2026?+
On March 19, 2026 the whole island observes 24 hours of silence from 6am: Ngurah Rai Airport closes completely, roads are off-limits, shops shut, and tourists must stay inside their hotels with lights and noise kept to a minimum. Only emergencies are exempt. The airport reopens at 6am on March 20.
Does Indonesia move holidays that fall on a weekend?+
