Three in-lieu Mondays make 2026 a long-weekend year
In Singapore, when a public holiday falls on a Sunday the following Monday becomes a public holiday. In 2026 that happens three times — Vesak Day (May 31), National Day (Aug 9) and Deepavali (Nov 8) all fall on a Sunday — creating in-lieu Mondays on Jun 1, Aug 10 and Nov 9.
Add Good Friday (Apr 3), Labour Day (May 1) and Christmas (Dec 25) all landing on a Friday, and 2026 offers six three-day long weekends with no leave required.
Singapore's multicultural public holidays
The 11 holidays reflect Singapore's main communities: Chinese (Chinese New Year), Muslim (Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Haji), Hindu (Deepavali) and Christian (Good Friday, Christmas), plus secular New Year's Day, Labour Day and National Day. Employment Act: pay and entitlement on public holidays
Under the Employment Act, Part IV employees are entitled to paid leave on all 11 gazetted public holidays. When a holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is a public holiday instead (Employment Act s.87(2)). If required to work on a public holiday, the employer must pay at least one extra day's salary at the gross rate of pay (s.88(2)) or grant a day off in lieu — not both.
Managers and executives earning above the Act's salary threshold are not covered by Part IV and rely on their employment contracts instead. MOM publishes the official list each June; Muslim and Hindu dates may shift on moon sighting — check the MOM press release before locking in travel.
