Austria Public Holidays 2027

Austria has 13 statutory public holidays (Feiertage) in 2027, and no Bundesland may add a regional one. It is a poor year for employees: four of the thirteen fall on a weekend — Labour Day/Republic Day (Sat 1 May), the Assumption (Sun 15 August) and both Christmas days (Sat 25 and Sun 26 December) — and Austrian law has no substitute day, so those four are simply gone. Only nine holidays give a weekday off. That makes the two Thursday feiertage (Ascension 6 May, Corpus Christi 27 May) and the Tuesday Nationalfeiertag (26 October) the only realistic ways to build a long weekend, one Urlaub day each.

At a glance

Austria has 13 official public holidays (13 days off) in 2027 and 7 long weekends; the longest break is Easter with Karfreitag (Mar 26 – 29, 4 days).

Karfreitag: not on the calendar, not in the export

Good Friday is deliberately kept out of the holiday table above. It was removed as a statutory work-free day by BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019 (the paragraph that used to cover it, § 7 Abs. 3 ARG, was repealed effective 22 March 2019), and it is not in § 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957. Today it survives only as a confessional exemption at school and as a “quiet holiday” under some Länder event laws. Because the table feeds the ICS/CSV/PDF downloads, adding it here would put a working day into your real calendar.

Thirteen federal holidays — and no state holidays at all

§ 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957 (BGBl. Nr. 153/1957) fixes one closed list of 13 days for the entire federation, and § 7 Abs. 2 of the Arbeitsruhegesetz (ARG) repeats it for labour law. Austrian Länder cannot create an additional work-free public holiday for private-sector employees, so there is no Austrian equivalent of a Bavarian or Saxon extra day: 13 is the number everywhere, from Vienna to Burgenland.

What the Länder do have are patron-saint festival days, and the Federal Ministry of Education lists them as days when schools are closed: St Joseph (19 March) in Kärnten, Steiermark, Tirol and Vorarlberg; St Florian (4 May) in Oberösterreich; St Rupert (24 September) in Salzburg; St Martin (11 November) in Burgenland; and St Leopold (15 November) in Niederösterreich and Vienna. In 2027 all five fall on a weekday (19 March Friday, 4 May Tuesday, 24 September Friday, 11 November Thursday, 15 November Monday), so the schools in those Länder are shut while businesses keep normal hours.

Aggregators that still print a Kärnten “plebiscite day” on 10 October are describing a date that is absent from every official list we checked: it does not appear in § 1 Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957, nor in the ministry’s school-closure list, nor in the cross-check APIs we compare against. We do not publish it.

No substitute days: 2027 loses four holidays to weekends

Austria has neither the British “next Monday” rule nor the Japanese substitute holiday. If a public holiday lands on a Sunday, § 7 Abs. 7 ARG simply applies the ordinary Sunday-rest rules, and § 2 Abs. 4 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz switches off the extra protections — you do not get another day. A Saturday holiday is just as unrecoverable for a normal five-day week.

2027 is a bad year for it: four of the thirteen holidays are wasted — Republic Day on Saturday 1 May, the Assumption on Sunday 15 August, and, most painfully, both Christmas days (Saturday 25 and Sunday 26 December). Only nine holidays fall on a weekday. Pay is unaffected (§ 9 ARG keeps the holiday wage); the loss is purely the day off, which is exactly why the Fenstertag calendar below matters more in 2027 than in most years.

Fenstertage 2027: where one Urlaub day still buys four days off

A Fenstertag (“window day”) is the working day between a holiday and the weekend, filled with Urlaub. With four holidays lost to weekends, 2027 offers just three real bridge days: Friday 7 May (after Ascension), Friday 28 May (after Corpus Christi) and Monday 25 October (before the Tuesday Nationalfeiertag). Two Thursday holidays in the same month also mean a second four-day break in May — and if you have a persönlichen Feiertag to spend, Friday 26 March in front of Easter Monday is the popular candidate.

Because so many Austrians discover this at the same time, expect the classic Fenstertag squeeze: treat 7–9 May and 28–30 May as peak-season dates for trains and Alpine hotels, and file the leave request as early as your employer allows.

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays does Austria have in 2027?

Thirteen, fixed by § 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957 and identical in all nine Bundesländer. In 2027 four of them land on a weekend (1 May, 15 August, 25 December, 26 December) and Austria has no substitute-day rule, so a Monday-to-Friday employee gets nine real days off.

What is the longest holiday break in Austria in 2027?

The longest break in Austria is Easter with Karfreitag (Mar 26 – 29, 4 days).

What are the official public holidays in Austria in 2027?

Austria has 13 official public holidays in 2027: New Year's Day (January 1, 2027), Epiphany (Three Kings’ Day) (January 6, 2027), Easter Monday (March 29, 2027), Republic Day (Staatsfeiertag) (May 1, 2027), Ascension Day (May 6, 2027), Whit Monday (May 17, 2027), Corpus Christi (May 27, 2027), Assumption of Mary (August 15, 2027), National Day (Nationalfeiertag) (October 26, 2027), All Saints’ Day (November 1, 2027), Immaculate Conception (December 8, 2027), Christmas Day (December 25, 2027), St. Stephen’s Day (Second Christmas Day) (December 26, 2027).

Is Good Friday a public holiday in Austria in 2027?

No. Good Friday 2027 falls on March 26 and is a normal working day. It was Austria’s only denominational holiday until the reform in BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019 removed it (§ 7 Abs. 3 ARG repealed, § 33a Abs. 28 ARG voiding collective-agreement special rules). In its place, § 7a ARG lets every worker name one vacation day per year as a persönlichen Feiertag, in writing three months ahead — which is how you would get the four-day Easter.

Why is Christmas 2027 only two days off in Austria?

Because both statutory Christmas days fall on the weekend: 25 December 2027 is a Saturday and 26 December is a Sunday. Austrian law has no substitute day, so there is no Monday back at work — you get December 25 and 26, which you would have had anyway. December 24 is a Friday and a normal (if short) working day: many collective agreements free staff from around noon, and shops close early.

Which is the best day to take leave in Austria in 2027?

Friday 7 May, the day after Ascension Day (Thursday 6 May): one vacation day yields four days off, from Thursday to Sunday. Friday 28 May does the same around Corpus Christi, and Monday 25 October turns the Tuesday Nationalfeiertag into a Saturday-to-Tuesday break. Only three such bridge days exist in 2027, so request them early.

Are there regional holidays in Austria that only apply in one Bundesland?

Not as work-free public holidays. The patron-saint days (19 March, 4 May, 24 September, 11 November, 15 November) exist in the Federal Ministry of Education’s list of school closures and in Länder practice, but they are not in the federal holiday statute, so businesses and transport run normally. They are listed here as information, not as days off.

Do Austrian public holidays ever change from year to year?

The list itself does not. Nine dates are fixed calendar days and four are derived from Easter (Easter Monday, Ascension, Whit Monday, Corpus Christi), so the calendar is fully predictable years ahead — no annual government notice is needed, which is why this page can be marked confirmed. The only thing that shifts is which holidays hit a weekend and are therefore lost, and a statutory change would of course need a new act.
