Boxing Day: Is December 26 a Public Holiday?

Boxing Day 2026 falls on Saturday, December 26.

Boxing Day is 26 December, the day after Christmas, and seventeen of the calendars this site publishes take it off — but never as one uniform holiday. The United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and New Zealand move a weekend date to the next weekday; South Africa and Kenya substitute only when it falls on a Sunday; Ireland never moves it at all; Hong Kong calls it “the first weekday after Christmas Day” and counts Saturday as a weekday; and most of continental Europe keeps a fixed second day of Christmas under another name. The tables below derive every date from each country’s official calendar on this site, substitutes included.

Also known as: December 26 · St. Stephen’s Day · Second Day of Christmas · Day of Goodwill · 2. Weihnachtstag · Annandag jul

Where a government sets the length of the break by annual decree — mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia — the full arrangement has not been published for that year yet, so treat those day counts as a floor and any blank as "not announced", not as a working day.

Rows marked provisional show only the dates already fixed. Where a government sets the length of the break by annual decree — mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia — the full arrangement has not been published for that year yet, so treat those day counts as a floor and any blank as "not announced", not as a working day.

One date, four rulebooks

What happens on a weekend is the whole difference. In the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ghana, a 26 December that lands on a Saturday or Sunday is observed on the next weekday: in 2026 that is Monday 28 December, and in 2027, when Christmas Day has already taken the Monday, Boxing Day lands on Tuesday 28 December.

South Africa and Kenya apply a narrower, older Commonwealth rule: only a Sunday triggers a substitute Monday. Their 2026 calendars keep the holiday on Saturday 26 December with nothing given back, while 2027 adds Monday 27 December. Ireland transfers nothing in any year — a weekend Saint Stephen’s Day is simply lost, and the law compensates through the employer instead of a moved day. Hong Kong phrases its rule as “the first weekday after Christmas Day”, and because a Saturday counts as a weekday there, the 2026 holiday stays on the Saturday itself.

The rest never move because there is nothing to move: Germany, Austria, Italy, Czechia, Greece, Norway and Sweden gazette a fixed second day of Christmas that falls wherever 26 December falls. That is why the year tables above show those seven always on the same date, while the movers and the Sunday-only countries shuffle around them.

Why the day exists, and why the names differ

The English name is first recorded in the 1830s and is traditionally explained as the day Christmas boxes — gifts or money for servants, tradespeople and the poor — were handed out after the household’s own Christmas. It has nothing to do with the sport. Where the British crown’s calendar reached, the name travelled; where a Christian calendar already occupied the day, the local saint kept it.

So the same day is St. Stephen’s Day in Ireland (Santo Stefano in Italy, Stefanitag in Austria) after Christianity’s first martyr; the second day of Christmas in the Germanic and Nordic calendars (2. Weihnachtstag, 2. juledag, Annandag jul); and South Africa renamed its inherited Boxing Day the Day of Goodwill in 1994. The United States, which never had the British box tradition, simply never adopted the holiday.

Planning around 26 December

The two weekend years in this window are the ones to plan for. In 2026, the movers (the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Ghana) add Monday 28 December to the weekend, giving a three-day bridge with only the 25th taken as leave; Ireland, South Africa, Kenya and Hong Kong get no such Monday. In 2027 the calendar is unusually generous: Christmas on Saturday moves to Monday 27 December and Boxing Day moves to Tuesday 28 December, so four consecutive days off fall out of a single weekend in the moving countries, while the Sunday-only and fixed-date countries keep their shorter version.

Cross-border teams should also mind the asymmetry. On 28 December 2026, the United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ghana are off while the United States, Singapore, France and Japan are at work; on 27 December 2027, add South Africa, Kenya and Hong Kong to the working list while the movers are still on their second substitute day. Each country page linked from the tables above offers an ICS and CSV download of exactly its gazetted dates, so the moved Mondays land in your own calendar the way they land in the official one.

Frequently asked questions

Is Boxing Day a public holiday in the United States?

No. 26 December is a normal working day and US stock markets trade their regular session. Boxing Day was never added to the federal holiday list, and Kwanzaa — which does begin on 26 December — is a cultural celebration, not a day off. The only year the surrounding week shortens is when Christmas Day itself falls on a weekend, because the observed federal holiday then lands on the adjacent Friday or Monday.

What happens when Boxing Day falls on a weekend?

It depends on the country. The United Kingdom, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and Ghana move it to the next weekday — Monday 28 December in 2026, Tuesday 28 December in 2027 once Christmas has taken the Monday. South Africa and Kenya substitute only a Sunday date, so their Saturday 2026 holiday is not compensated. Ireland moves nothing in any year. The fixed second-day-of-Christmas countries (Germany, Austria, Italy, Czechia, Greece, Norway, Sweden) have nothing to move.

Why is it called Boxing Day?

Not from the sport. The name is recorded in England from the 1830s and traditionally refers to the Christmas box — a gift or money given to servants, tradespeople and the poor on the first working day after Christmas. Countries that received the holiday through other channels never took the name: the Catholic calendars keep St. Stephen, the Germanic and Nordic ones call it the second day of Christmas, and South Africa chose the Day of Goodwill in 1994.

Is 26 December a holiday in continental Europe?

In most of the centre, north and south, yes — under other names. Germany (2. Weihnachtstag), Austria (Stefanitag), Italy (Santo Stefano), Czechia (2. svátek vánoční), Greece (Synaxi tis Theotokou), Norway (2. juledag) and Sweden (Annandag jul) all gazette a fixed 26 December. France, Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands do not, and France’s only regional exception is Alsace-Moselle, where Saint Stephen’s Day survived as local law.

Why does South Africa call it the Day of Goodwill?

After the end of apartheid, South Africa renamed its inherited 26 December public holiday in 1994 to reflect a shared rather than colonial heritage. The date and the day off are unchanged — and so is the distinct substitute rule: the Public Holidays Act grants an extra Monday only when the holiday falls on a Sunday, which is why Saturday 26 December 2026 passes without one while 2027 gains Monday 27 December.

When is the UK Boxing Day bank holiday in 2026 and 2027?

In 2026, 26 December is a Saturday, so the Boxing Day bank holiday moves to Monday 28 December — with Christmas Day on the Friday, that is a four-day weekend from the 25th to the 28th. In 2027, 26 December is a Sunday: Christmas Day takes Monday 27 December and Boxing Day takes Tuesday 28 December, again pairing with the weekend for four days off.

How do I add these Boxing Day dates to my calendar?

Every country table above links to that country’s own holiday page, which offers a free ICS and CSV download built from exactly its gazetted list — substitute Mondays included under their official names, such as “Boxing Day (substitute day)” in the UK or “Day of Goodwill (observed)” in South Africa. Importing the ICS into Google, Apple or Outlook Calendar puts the moved dates where the government puts them.
