Golden Week in 2025 — but no Silver Week
Golden Week 2025 runs May 3–6: Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day fall on May 3–5, and because Greenery Day lands on a Sunday the substitute holiday moves to Tuesday May 6, making a 4-day break. Shōwa Day (Apr 29) sits a few days earlier as a separate day off. There is no Silver Week in 2025 — Respect for the Aged Day (Sep 15) and the Autumnal Equinox (Sep 23) are eight days apart, far too wide for a bridge holiday to connect them.
Substitute holidays (振替休日) in 2025
When a national holiday falls on a Sunday, Japanese law makes the next non-holiday day a substitute holiday (振替休日). In 2025 this happens three times: Feb 24 (for The Emperor’s Birthday on Sun Feb 23), May 6 (for Greenery Day on Sun May 4) and Nov 24 (for Labor Thanksgiving Day on Sun Nov 23).
