What counts as a U.S. federal holiday
The 11 federal holidays are set by federal law (5 U.S.C. 6103) for federal employees. On these days most federal offices, courts and banks close, and the financial markets are usually shut. The federal government cannot order private employers to close, so private-sector and school holidays follow but are not guaranteed.
Federal vs. state holidays
States set their own holidays in addition to the federal ones. Many states recognise Columbus Day as Indigenous Peoples’ Day, and states such as Texas and others observe extra days (for example the Friday after Thanksgiving or state-specific holidays). Always check your state and employer calendar for the exact days off.
