Japan Public Holidays 2028

Golden Week 2028 splits into two blocks. Shōwa Day (Apr 29) lands on a Saturday and is absorbed by the weekend, then May 1 (Monday) and May 2 (Tuesday) are ordinary working days. From Wednesday May 3 the run is unbroken: Constitution Memorial Day, Greenery Day and Children’s Day cover May 3–5, and Children’s Day falls on a Friday, so the weekend of May 6–7 extends the break to five days.

That gap is also the opportunity. Booking just two days of paid leave on Monday May 1 and Tuesday May 2 bridges the two blocks and turns the whole stretch from Saturday April 29 to Sunday May 7 into nine consecutive days off — one of the best leave-to-holiday ratios of the year. Expect flights and shinkansen seats for those dates to sell out early.

Under the Act on National Holidays, a substitute holiday (振替休日) is granted only when a national holiday falls on a Sunday — the next non-holiday day then becomes a day off. In 2028 not one of the 16 holidays lands on a Sunday, so for the first time in several years the calendar contains zero substitute days. There is no Citizens’ Holiday (国民の休日) either, because no single working day is sandwiched between two holidays.

The flip side is that two holidays are simply lost. New Year’s Day (Jan 1) and Shōwa Day (Apr 29) both fall on a Saturday, and Japanese law does not compensate Saturday holidays the way it compensates Sunday ones. Many companies with a Saturday–Sunday week hand out a discretionary day off, but there is no statutory right to one — check your own employer’s calendar rather than assuming.

Even without substitute days, 2028 is generous with short breaks: nine three-day weekends spread across the year. Four come from the Happy Monday holidays — Coming of Age Day (Jan 10), Marine Day (Jul 17), Respect for the Aged Day (Sep 18) and Sports Day (Oct 9). The Vernal Equinox also lands on a Monday (Mar 20). Four more come from holidays falling on a Friday: National Foundation Day (Feb 11), Mountain Day (Aug 11), the Autumnal Equinox (Sep 22) and Culture Day (Nov 3).

September is the standout. There is no Silver Week in the strict sense, because Respect for the Aged Day (Mon Sep 18) and the Autumnal Equinox (Fri Sep 22) are too far apart to trigger a Citizens’ Holiday. But they bracket only three working days: take Sep 19, 20 and 21 as paid leave and you get nine consecutive days off from Saturday Sep 16 to Sunday Sep 24 — the same length as the Golden Week trick, for one extra day of leave.

Fourteen of Japan’s 16 holidays have dates fixed directly by law — either a calendar date (Jan 1, Feb 11, May 5, Nov 3 and so on) or a rule such as “the second Monday of January”. The two equinox days are different: the law says only that they fall on the day the sun crosses the equator, so the exact date depends on an astronomical calculation.

The National Astronomical Observatory of Japan (NAOJ) performs that calculation and publishes it in the Rekiyōkō almanac, which appears in the official gazette each February for the following year. The 2028 gazette is therefore due in February 2027. NAOJ’s own long-range table already gives Monday March 20 and Friday September 22 for 2028, and those are the dates used here; the observatory notes that very long-range figures are projections, but two years out the calculation is settled well away from any midnight boundary.
