The globally dominant June observance originated in Spokane, Washington. Inspired by Anna Jarvis’s mother-honoring campaign, Sonora Smart Dodd sought to establish a counterpart honoring her Civil War veteran father, William Jackson Smart, who had raised six children alone. It serves simultaneously as Thailand’s National Day. Unlike Western observances, it is an official nationwide statutory public holiday: government ministries, public institutions, and financial institutions shut down.
