The 13 statutory holidays under Article 234
Portugal’s national public holidays are governed strictly by Article 234 of Law 7/2009 (Código do Trabalho). Following the temporary suspension of four holidays during the 2012–2015 austerity period, Law 8/2016 permanently restored Corpus Christi, Republic Day, All Saints’ Day, and Restoration of Independence in 2016. No substitute days when holidays fall on weekends
Unlike the United Kingdom, United States, or Spain where weekend holidays typically move to the following Monday, Portuguese statutory law provides no replacement working days when holidays fall on Saturdays or Sundays.
