Chinese New Year 2028 falls in late January — and lines up perfectly
Chinese New Year 2028 is Wednesday, January 26, one of the earlier Spring Festivals of the decade. The statutory block runs from New Year's Eve (Tue Jan 25) through the third day of the lunar year (Fri Jan 28) and flows directly into the Jan 29–30 weekend, so the calendar alone already produces a six-day break from Tuesday to Sunday — no make-up workdays required.
The official notice, expected around November–December 2027, will decide the final shape. Recent years have extended the Spring Festival to eight days by borrowing one or two weekend days as make-up workdays, and 2028’s layout is unusually friendly to an even longer break. Either way, the last week of January will be the world’s largest annual travel rush — plan around it.
Mid-Autumn lands inside the National Day break again
The Mid-Autumn Festival — the 15th day of the 8th lunar month — falls on Tuesday, October 3, 2028, exactly the third and last statutory day of the National Day holiday. Whenever the two festivals collide, the State Council merges them into one combined break: eight days in 2017 (Mid-Autumn on Oct 4), 2020 (Oct 1) and 2025 (Oct 6). A similar merged Golden Week is the likely outcome for 2028, but only the notice will confirm it.
October 1 itself falls on a Sunday in 2028, and the holiday regulation requires a festival day that lands on a weekend to be made up on a workday. Between the overlap and the Sunday start, the final October arrangement has more moving parts than usual — which is exactly why this page lists only the statutory dates for now.
Why this page has no make-up workdays (调休) yet
China builds its long breaks by 'borrowing' adjacent weekend days, which then become working days — the make-up workdays (调休 / 补班). Those exchanges cannot be derived from any rule: they are a policy decision published each year in the State Council's holiday arrangement notice, usually in November or December.
For 2028 that notice is expected in late 2027. Rather than guess, this page shows only the 13 statutory festival days set by the amended national holiday regulation — in force since 2025, when Chinese New Year's Eve and May 2 were added.
