When Is Eid al-Fitr?
Eid al-Fitr 2027 falls on Wednesday, March 10.
Eid al-Fitr marks the end of Ramadan, on the first day of Shawwal. Five calendars on this site gazette it, under five different names, and the length of the resulting break varies more than for any other festival we track: Indonesia effectively closes for a week as Lebaran, Malaysia takes two federal days, Singapore takes one. The date also moves earlier by about eleven days each Gregorian year.
Also known as: Hari Raya Aidilfitri Β· Hari Raya Puasa Β· Idul Fitri Β· Lebaran Β· Id-ul-Fitr

Why the gazetted date is provisional until the moon is sighted
The Islamic calendar begins each month with the sighting of the new crescent, so the exact Gregorian date of Eid can only be confirmed a day or two beforehand. Malaysia and Indonesia publish calculated dates well in advance and then confirm them; the Philippines issues a formal proclamation days before; Singapore gazettes early and rarely shifts. Our tables show the officially published dates, and any of them can move by one day.
Lebaran: the largest annual human migration in Southeast Asia
Indonesia grants two statutory days and then surrounds them with cuti bersama β collective leave days declared by the government that turn the holiday into a week or more. Tens of millions travel home for mudik, and offices, banks and much of the logistics network genuinely stop. If you have a deadline touching Indonesia, the cuti bersama days matter more than the two gazetted ones.
The date moves earlier every year
A lunar Islamic year is about eleven days shorter than a solar year, so Eid al-Fitr walks backwards through the Gregorian calendar and completes a full circuit roughly every 33 years. Multi-year planning therefore cannot assume a stable season: within the range on this page it moves from late March into early March.

Frequently asked questions
What date is Eid al-Fitr in 2026 and 2027?+
The gazetted date is 21 March 2026 and 10 March 2027 in Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia. Actual observance can shift by a day depending on the local moon sighting.
Which country has the longest Eid al-Fitr holiday?+
Indonesia, without question. Two statutory days plus several cuti bersama days routinely produce a break of five to eight days, against two in Malaysia and one in Singapore.
Are Hari Raya Puasa, Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Lebaran the same festival?+
Yes β they are the Singaporean, Malaysian and Indonesian names for Eid al-Fitr. Only the holiday policy around them differs.
Why can the date change at the last minute?+
Because the month of Shawwal begins with the physical sighting of the new crescent moon. Authorities publish a calculated date, then confirm or move it by a day once the sighting is reported.
Is Eid al-Fitr a public holiday in India?+
Yes. Id-ul-Fitr is on the central governmentβs gazetted holiday list, and the observed date can vary by a day between states depending on the local moon sighting.
