Malaysia Public Holidays 2028

The fixed-date holidays — New Year, Labour Day (May 1), the King’s Birthday (first Monday of June, Jun 5 in 2028), Merdeka Day (Aug 31), Malaysia Day (Sep 16) and Christmas — are certain. Chinese New Year is set by the Chinese lunar calendar (Jan 26–27, 2028). The Islamic holidays (Hari Raya Aidilfitri, Aidiladha, Awal Muharram, Maulidur Rasul) and the Hindu and Buddhist festivals (Deepavali, Wesak) are shown as astronomical estimates and may move by a day either way once confirmed by moon-sighting and the official gazette.

The federal gazette for 2028 is expected around October–November 2027. Remember that these are the federal (nationwide) holidays only. Each state and federal territory gazettes additional local holidays, which are usually published toward the end of the preceding year. We will update this page as the official 2028 dates are confirmed.

2028 has an unusual quirk. Hari Raya Aidilfitri Day 1 is expected to fall on Sunday Feb 27, and under Malaysian practice a public holiday that lands on the weekly rest day is replaced on the next working day. Because Day 2 already occupies the Monday, the replacement rolls to Tuesday — which in 2028 is February 29. If the gazette confirms it, the country gets a rare leap-day public holiday and a four-day break from Feb 26 to 29.

The flip side: New Year’s Day (Jan 1) and Malaysia Day (Sep 16) both fall on a Saturday, and Malaysia does not grant replacement days for Saturday holidays. That is why 2028 provisionally has just one replacement day, compared with five in 2027. Also note that Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu run a Friday–Saturday weekend, so the effect of any given holiday differs by state — always check your state’s own gazetted calendar.
