Federal vs state holidays in Malaysia
The holidays on this page are the federal (nationwide) ones observed across Malaysia. On top of these, each of the 13 states and 3 federal territories gazettes its own holidays — sultans’ birthdays, Thaipusam, Good Friday (Sabah & Sarawak), Gawai Dayak (Sarawak), Federal Territory Day and others — so the total number of days off varies by location. Peninsular employees under the Employment Act are guaranteed at least 11 paid public holidays a year.
In 2025 only one federal holiday fell on a rest day: National Day (Sunday Aug 31), giving a replacement on Monday September 1. The standout break was Hari Raya Aidilfitri, which combined with the weekend for a 4-day stretch from March 29 to April 1.
