Malaysia Public Holidays (2025–2028)

Malaysia’s 2026 federal (nationwide) public holidays span the country’s major Muslim, Chinese, Hindu and Christian festivals, plus the King’s Birthday, Merdeka Day and Malaysia Day. Holidays that fall on a state rest day roll over to a replacement weekday. Each state also gazettes extra local holidays.

Federal vs state holidays — and the replacement-day rule

Malaysia has two layers of public holidays. The federal (nationwide) holidays listed here are observed across the country, but each of the 13 states and 3 federal territories also gazettes its own holidays — sultans’ birthdays, Thaipusam, Good Friday (Sabah & Sarawak), Gawai Dayak (Sarawak), Federal Territory Day and more. So the exact days off depend on where you are.

When a holiday falls on a state’s weekly rest day (Sunday in most states; Friday in Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu), the next working day becomes a replacement (cuti ganti). In 2026 this gives three replacements: Hari Raya Aidilfitri (Mon Mar 23), Wesak Day (Tue Jun 2, because Mon Jun 1 is the King’s Birthday) and Deepavali (Mon Nov 9).

Frequently asked questions

How many public holidays does Malaysia have in 2026?+

There are about 15 federal (nationwide) holiday days in 2026, including three replacement days. Each state adds its own local holidays on top.

When is Chinese New Year 2026 in Malaysia?+

Chinese New Year is February 17–18, 2026 (Tuesday and Wednesday), a nationwide two-day holiday.

When is Hari Raya Aidilfitri 2026?+

Hari Raya Aidilfitri is March 21–22, 2026, with a replacement holiday on Monday March 23. The Islamic date is subject to moon-sighting confirmation.

Why is there a holiday on Tuesday June 2, 2026?+

Wesak Day falls on Sunday May 31, 2026. Its replacement would be Monday June 1, but that is already the King’s Birthday, so the replacement moves to Tuesday June 2 — making a 4-day weekend.

What are the 11 gazetted public holidays in Malaysia?+

Under the Employment Act 1955, employees are entitled to paid holiday on 11 of the gazetted public holidays each year (plus any day declared under the Holidays Act). Five of the eleven are fixed by law and the employer chooses the remaining six from the gazetted list — so which federal holidays you actually get can vary by company.

What are the 5 compulsory public holidays in Malaysia?+

National Day (Aug 31), the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday (first Monday of June), the birthday of your state’s Ruler or Yang di-Pertua Negeri, Labour Day (May 1) and Malaysia Day (Sep 16). Every employer must observe these five; the other six holidays are the employer’s pick.

Is there an extra public holiday in Malaysia in 2026?+

None has been gazetted beyond the federal list above so far. The government does occasionally declare ad-hoc additional holidays at short notice (as it has done for special occasions in past years), and states can add their own — we update this page and the calendar downloads whenever that happens.

Where can I download the Malaysia 2026 holiday calendar?+

Our Malaysia 2026 page and the holiday calendar downloads hub offer ICS and CSV files based on the federal gazette from the Prime Minister’s Department.
