Is All Saints’ Day a Public Holiday?

All Saints’ Day 2026 falls on Sunday, November 1.

All Saints’ Day is fixed on 1 November, so the date never needs looking up — what changes is the weekday, and what each country does with it. Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Chile and the Philippines keep the day where it falls, so a Sunday in 2026 simply vanishes into the weekend. Colombia moves it to a Monday by law, Sweden holds it on a Saturday between 31 October and 6 November, and Germany gives it to only five states, which is why it is a working day across most of the country. This page lines the calendars up year by year.

Rows marked provisional show only the dates already fixed. Where a government sets the length of the break by annual decree — mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia — the full arrangement has not been published for that year yet, so treat those day counts as a floor and any blank as "not announced", not as a working day.

A fixed date with a moving weekday

1 November is a Saturday in 2025, a Sunday in 2026, a Monday in 2027 and a Wednesday in 2028, and that is the whole story for the places that keep the day where it falls. 2026 is the lean year: the Sunday swallows the holiday, and only Belgium’s replacement-day rule and some Spanish regions give anything back. 2027 is the strong one — a Monday makes a three-day weekend, so the break around Monday 1 November 2027 is the one to plan early.

Colombia and Sweden move it — in opposite directions

Colombia applies its Emiliani law and shifts the holiday to the following Monday: 3 November 2025, 2 November 2026, 1 November 2027 and 6 November 2028 — so the day off is always a Monday and is never lost to a weekend. Sweden does the reverse and pins All Saints’ Day to the Saturday between 31 October and 6 November: 1 November 2025, 31 October 2026, 6 November 2027 and 4 November 2028. The date wanders, the weekday never does, and since most Swedes already have Saturday off, it is a holiday that almost never costs a working day.

Halloween, All Souls’ Day and the Day of the Dead are different days

All Saints’ Day is the 1 November feast. Halloween is its eve on 31 October and is not a public holiday in any calendar here. The day after, 2 November, is All Souls’ Day: Brazil (Finados) and Macau list that one rather than 1 November as their public holiday. Mexico’s Day of the Dead is celebrated on 1–2 November but is not a federal holiday, so it shows below as a working day.

Frequently asked questions

Is All Saints’ Day a public holiday?

In Spain, Portugal, France, Italy, Belgium, Austria, Chile, the Philippines and Sweden, yes — and in Colombia too, though the day off moves to a Monday. In the United Kingdom, the United States and Mexico it is an ordinary working day, and in Germany it is a holiday in only five states.

Is All Saints’ Day a public holiday in Germany?

Only regionally. It is a public holiday in Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, North Rhine-Westphalia, Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland, and a normal working day in the other eleven states, which is why it is not a national holiday.

Is All Saints’ Day 2026 a day off, given it falls on a Sunday?

Mostly not. 1 November 2026 is a Sunday, and France, Italy, Portugal, Austria and Chile give no replacement day. Belgian law gives a replacement day, some Spanish regions move it to Monday 2 November, and Colombia, which always moves it to a Monday, takes Monday 2 November.

Why is All Saints’ Day always on a Monday in Colombia?

Because of the Emiliani law (Ley 51 of 1983), which moves most of the country’s religious holidays to the following Monday to create long weekends. If 1 November is already a Monday, as in 2027, nothing moves.

Why does Sweden’s All Saints’ Day fall on a Saturday?

Swedish law sets Alla helgons dag as the Saturday between 31 October and 6 November, so the date moves from year to year — 1 November in 2025, 31 October in 2026, 6 November in 2027 — but the weekday never does.

Is Halloween or the Day of the Dead a public holiday?

Halloween (31 October) is not a public holiday in any calendar on this site. Mexico’s Day of the Dead (1–2 November) is widely celebrated but is not a federal holiday. The nearest public holiday is All Souls’ Day on 2 November, which Brazil and Macau observe.
