Is Assumption Day a Public Holiday?

Assumption Day 2027 falls on Sunday, August 15.

Assumption Day is fixed on 15 August, so the question is never which day but which weekday — and in 2026 and 2027 the answer is the weekend. France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Belgium, Chile and Greece keep the holiday where it falls, so a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027 mostly cost them the day. Colombia moves it to a Monday by law, and Germany gives it only to Saarland and part of Bavaria. This page lines the calendars up year by year, including Greece, where the same feast is called the Dormition of the Virgin.

Rows marked provisional show only the dates already fixed. Where a government sets the length of the break by annual decree — mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia — the full arrangement has not been published for that year yet, so treat those day counts as a floor and any blank as "not announced", not as a working day.

Two weekend years in a row

15 August is a Friday in 2025, a Saturday in 2026, a Sunday in 2027 and a Tuesday in 2028. For the places that keep the date where it falls, 2026 and 2027 are the lean years: the holiday disappears into the weekend and nothing replaces it, with two exceptions: Belgian law gives a replacement day, and in 2027 Spain’s autonomous communities typically transfer the Sunday to Monday 16 August. 2025 gives a three-day weekend, and 2028’s Tuesday is the year to bridge — take Monday 14 August and you are off from Saturday to Tuesday.

Colombia moves it; Italy turns it into a season

Colombia shifts the holiday to the following Monday under the Emiliani law: 18 August 2025, 17 August 2026, 16 August 2027 and 21 August 2028 — so even a Saturday or Sunday 15 August buys a paid Monday. In Italy the day is called Ferragosto and sits in the middle of the August break, when many businesses close for the week around it, so what the official calendar shows as one day is in practice a week of shut doors.

Catholic Europe, not the whole of it

The holiday follows the Catholic and Orthodox calendars. Germany treats it as regional — a holiday in Saarland and in Bavarian municipalities with a mostly Catholic population, an ordinary working day elsewhere — and neither the United Kingdom nor the United States lists it at all. They appear below as working days so that “no day off” is an answer rather than a blank.

Frequently asked questions

Is Assumption Day a public holiday?

In France, Italy, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Belgium and Chile, yes, on 15 August itself; Colombia observes it on the following Monday; Greece observes the same feast as the Dormition of the Virgin. In the United Kingdom and the United States it is an ordinary working day, and in Germany only Saarland and part of Bavaria take it.

What happens when Assumption Day falls on a Saturday or Sunday?

In most places the day is simply lost: France, Italy, Portugal, Austria, Chile and Greece give no replacement. Belgium replaces it with another paid day by law, Colombia moves it to the following Monday, and in 2027 Spain’s autonomous communities typically transfer the Sunday to Monday 16 August. 15 August is a Saturday in 2026 and a Sunday in 2027.

Why does Colombia take Assumption Day on a Monday?

The Emiliani law (Ley 51 of 1983) moves most religious holidays to the following Monday to create long weekends. The dates are 18 August 2025, 17 August 2026, 16 August 2027 and 21 August 2028.

Is 15 August a public holiday in Germany?

Only regionally: it is a public holiday in Saarland and, in Bavaria, only in municipalities with a mostly Catholic population. In the rest of Germany it is an ordinary working day, so it is not on the national list.

What is Ferragosto?

Ferragosto is the Italian name for 15 August, the Assumption holiday. It marks the middle of the traditional August break, when many Italian businesses close for the week around it, so the long weekend matters less than the shut-down that surrounds it.
