The Philippines is the country where a holiday calendar can change on a month’s notice. Every year’s holidays are fixed by presidential proclamation, and the President can also move certain holidays to the nearest Monday and declare extra special non-working days whenever there is a reason to. Even so, the provisional 2027 list already produces eight breaks of three days or more. The anchors are a four-day Holy Week (Mar 25–28), a four-day Undas around All Saints’ and All Souls’ (Oct 30 – Nov 2) and a three-day Christmas (Dec 24–26). Regular holidays vs special non-working days — and why your pay differs
The Philippines runs two classes of holiday, and the difference is money rather than whether offices close. Regular holidays (12 in a typical year) are paid even if you do not work, and if you do work you get 200% of your daily rate. Special (non-working) days (8 or so) default to "no work, no pay" unless your company policy is more generous, and working them earns a 30% premium. Both usually mean a day off, but only one of them means a paid day off by default.
The 2027 long weekends mix both types. Holy Week runs Maundy Thursday March 25 and Good Friday March 26 (both regular holidays), Black Saturday March 27 (a special non-working day) and Easter Sunday March 28 — four days, and the single period when the Philippines shuts down more comprehensively than at Christmas. Undas pairs All Saints’ Day on Monday November 1 with All Souls’ Day on Tuesday November 2, extending the weekend to four days. Christmas Eve (Fri Dec 24) is a special non-working day ahead of Christmas Day on the Saturday.
Holiday economics: the proclamation can add more
Under Republic Act 9492, several holidays whose exact date is not religiously fixed can be moved to the nearest Monday to create a long weekend — a policy commonly called holiday economics, intended to boost domestic tourism. That is why the Philippine calendar shifts from year to year in ways that surprise visitors: a holiday you remember on a Tuesday may be proclaimed for the Monday instead. Religious and date-critical holidays such as Holy Week, All Saints’ Day, Christmas and Rizal Day are not moved.
Five of the eight breaks below need no bridge at all — the holiday simply lands at a weekend edge: New Year’s Day on Friday January 1, Araw ng Kagitingan on Friday April 9, Eid’l Adha on Monday May 17, National Heroes Day on Monday August 30, and the Rizal Day and New Year’s Eve pair on Thursday December 30 and Friday December 31, which together with the weekend closes the year with four days off. Add the President’s power to proclaim additional special non-working days at short notice — for elections, papal visits or typhoon recovery — and the final 2027 count will very likely exceed eight.
