Macau Long Weekends 2027
Macau publishes 20 public holidays a year — one of the most generous lists in Asia — and on the provisional 2027 calendar eight of them land on a Friday or a Monday. The result is eight long weekends, each exactly three days: New Year (Jan 1–3), Lunar New Year (Feb 6–8), Easter (Mar 26–28), Ching Ming (Apr 3–5), National Day (Oct 1–3), Chong Yeung (Oct 8–10), Macao SAR Establishment Day (Dec 18–20) and Christmas (Dec 24–26). As in Hong Kong, the more important question is which of these your employer is actually obliged to give you.

Twenty public holidays, ten obligatory ones
Macau’s Labour Relations Law guarantees every private-sector employee ten obligatory holidays (feriados obrigatórios): New Year’s Day, the first three days of Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Labour Day, the day following the Mid-Autumn Festival, National Day, Chong Yeung and Macao SAR Establishment Day. The other ten gazetted public holidays — Good Friday, the day before Easter, Buddha’s Birthday, Tung Ng, All Souls’ Day, the Feast of the Immaculate Conception, the Winter Solstice, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day among them — are observed by the government and by many employers, but they are not the legal minimum.
That split maps neatly onto the 2027 long weekends. Six of the eight — New Year (Jan 1–3), Lunar New Year (Feb 6–8), Ching Ming (Apr 3–5), National Day (Oct 1–3, where October 1 and 2 are both holidays), Chong Yeung (Oct 8–10) and SAR Establishment Day (Dec 18–20) — are built from obligatory holidays, so essentially everyone gets them. The remaining two, Easter (Mar 26–28) and Christmas (Dec 24–26), rest entirely on non-obligatory days — Good Friday, the day before Easter, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day — so casino floor staff, retail and hospitality workers frequently work straight through them.
Why the 2027 dates are still provisional
Macau gazettes each year’s public holidays through an order of the Chief Executive (despacho), normally issued during the preceding year. Until the 2027 order is published, the lunar-based festivals shown here — Lunar New Year, Ching Ming, Tung Ng, the Mid-Autumn Festival and Chong Yeung — plus the movable Easter dates are projected from the astronomical calendar and may shift by a day. The fixed-date holidays (New Year, Labour Day, National Day, All Souls’, the Immaculate Conception, SAR Establishment Day and Christmas) are certain.
One difference from Hong Kong is worth flagging for cross-border travellers: Macau does not apply Hong Kong’s blanket Sunday-substitution rule, so a Macau holiday landing on a Sunday can simply pass. That is why the 2027 Lunar New Year break is three days in Macau but four in Hong Kong, where the second day falling on a Sunday triggers a substitute holiday on the fourth day. If you commute between the two, check both calendars rather than assuming they match.

Why is Macau’s Lunar New Year break shorter than Hong Kong’s in 2027?+
Because Macau does not apply Hong Kong’s automatic Sunday-substitution rule. The first three Lunar New Year days fall on Saturday February 6, Sunday February 7 and Monday February 8 in both places, but Hong Kong adds a substitute holiday on Tuesday February 9 for the Sunday, making four days there and three in Macau.

The December cluster is the best value: SAR Establishment Day (Mon Dec 20), the Winter Solstice (Wed Dec 22), Christmas Eve and Christmas Day sit in the same fortnight, so leave on Tuesday December 21 and Thursday December 23 links December 18 to December 26 — nine days for two days of leave.
