Understanding Austrian "Fenstertage" (Window Days)
A "Fenstertag" (window day, also called Zwickeltag) is a single working day situated between a statutory holiday (typically on a Thursday) and the weekend. In Austria, Ascension Day, Corpus Christi, and All Saints’ Day in 2029 all fall on Thursdays, allowing employees to take a single vacation day on Friday to unlock four consecutive days off.
Good Friday (Karfreitag) is NOT a statutory public holiday in Austria
Good Friday was removed as a statutory holiday following legal reforms (BGBl. I Nr. 22/2019). It is not listed in § 1 of the Feiertagsruhegesetz 1957. Instead, Austrian employees have the right to designate one vacation day per year as a "persönlicher Feiertag" (personal holiday) under § 7a ARG with three months’ written notice.
