Vietnam Public Holidays 2028
Vietnam is expected to have 12 statutory public holiday days in 2028. Tet (Lunar New Year) falls on Wednesday, January 26 β the Year of the Monkey β and the five statutory Tet days run straight into the weekend for at least a six-day break. Reunification Day (Apr 30) falls on a Sunday, so the Labour Code compensatory rule pushes the day off to Tuesday, May 2, creating a four-day break with Labour Day. National Day (Sep 2) falls on a Saturday; the second National Day holiday (Sep 1 or Sep 3) is chosen by the government each year. This page will be updated once the official 2028 schedule is published.

Provisional dates β official schedule coming
The Vietnam government typically announces the official holiday arrangements for the following year β including the extended Tet break, any swapped Saturday workdays and the National Day cluster β around October to December. The dates on this page reflect statutory entitlements under the Labor Code plus lunar-calendar conversions for Tet and Hung Kings' Day; they are not yet the Cabinet-approved schedule. For that reason this page lists no make-up workdays at all: any swapped Saturdays will be added once they are actually announced, not guessed in advance.
Once the official 2028 announcement is published β expected in late 2027 β this page will be updated with the exact Tet break length, the make-up workdays and the confirmed National Day arrangement (the Labour Code grants two days: Sep 2 plus Sep 1 or Sep 3, picked by the government each year). How the compensatory-rest rule shapes 2028
Three of Vietnam's 2028 holidays land on weekend days: New Year's Day (Sat Jan 1), Reunification Day (Sun Apr 30) and National Day (Sat Sep 2). The Labour Code says that when a public holiday coincides with a worker's weekly rest day, the day off moves to the next working day. For Reunification Day this is unambiguous for most workers: the holiday slides past Monday (already Labour Day) and lands on Tuesday May 2, stretching the break to four days (Apr 29βMay 2).
For the two Saturday holidays the answer depends on your employer's schedule. Workers on a five-day MonβFri week have Saturday as a weekly rest day, so Jan 1 and Sep 2 would normally be compensated on Mon Jan 3 and Mon Sep 4 respectively; workers whose only rest day is Sunday get nothing extra for a Saturday holiday. The annual government notice confirms how these cases are handled, which is why this page marks every weekend-adjacent day off as provisional.
Tet 2028: a late-January Monkey year
Tet Nguyen Dan 2028 begins on Wednesday, January 26 β unusually early, as the lunar new year cycles back into January. The five statutory days (Tue Jan 25 through Sat Jan 29) already chain into the Sunday, so even before the government adds its customary extension the break is six days long. In practice the announced Tet holiday usually stretches to seven to nine days by swapping nearby Saturdays into workdays; expect that decision around OctoberβDecember 2027.
Travel advice flips with the early date: the pre-Tet rush (flower markets, hometown exodus, rising fares) now peaks in the third and fourth weeks of January, and most family-run shops close from around Jan 24 until the break ends. Book domestic flights and trains weeks ahead, and expect businesses to be slow to reopen in the first days of February.

Frequently asked questions
When is Vietnamese Tet 2028?+
Lunar New Year's Day falls on Wednesday, January 26, 2028 β the Year of the Monkey. The five statutory Tet days run Jan 25β29 and flow into the weekend for at least a six-day break; the extended Tet holiday length and any make-up workdays will be announced by the government around OctoberβDecember 2027.
How many public holidays will Vietnam have in 2028?+
12 statutory public holiday days, including Vietnamese Cultural Day on November 24. Eleven of the dates are listed on this page; the twelfth is the second National Day holiday β the government picks Sep 1 or Sep 3 each year and announces the choice with the official 2028 schedule.
When will the official 2028 holiday schedule be announced?+
Typically between October and December 2027, by the government (Ministry of Home Affairs / Government Office). The announcement covers the Tet break length, make-up workdays and the National Day arrangement.
Do Reunification Day and Labour Day create a long break in 2028?+
Yes. Reunification Day falls on Sunday, April 30, and Labour Day on Monday, May 1. Because Reunification Day lands on the weekly rest day, the Labour Code compensatory day rolls to Tuesday, May 2 β giving a four-day break from Saturday, April 29 to Tuesday, May 2 (to be confirmed by the official schedule).
What happens when a Vietnamese public holiday falls on a weekend?+
The Labour Code grants a compensatory day off on the next working day whenever a public holiday coincides with the worker's weekly rest day. In 2028 that rule matters three times: New Year's Day (Sat Jan 1), Reunification Day (Sun Apr 30) and National Day (Sat Sep 2). For MonβFri workers the likely compensatory days are Mon Jan 3 and Mon Sep 4, while the Sunday Reunification Day rolls to Tue May 2. The annual government notice confirms the exact handling.
Where can I download the Vietnam 2028 holiday calendar?+
Our Vietnam 2028 page and the holiday calendar downloads hub offer ICS and CSV files. These will be updated once the official 2028 schedule is confirmed by the government.
