When Is the Qingming Festival?

Qingming Festival 2027 falls on Monday, April 5.

Qingming — Tomb-Sweeping Day — is the one East Asian festival fixed by the sun rather than the moon: it rides the solar term that sits fifteen degrees past the spring equinox, which is why it lands on 4 or 5 April every single year while its lunar cousins drift for weeks. All four Chinese-speaking calendars on this site gazette it, each under a different name: Qingming on the mainland, Ching Ming in Hong Kong and Macau, and a merged Children’s Day & Tomb-Sweeping Day in Taiwan.

Also known as: Tomb-Sweeping Day · Ching Ming Festival · Cheng Beng · Ancestors’ Day · 清明節

Rows marked provisional show only the dates already fixed. Where a government sets the length of the break by annual decree — mainland China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Indonesia — the full arrangement has not been published for that year yet, so treat those day counts as a floor and any blank as "not announced", not as a working day.

A solar term wearing a festival’s clothes

Qingming is first a solar term — one of the 24 divisions of the solar year — and only secondarily a holiday. That ancestry explains its odd discipline: while Lunar New Year swings across five weeks and Mid-Autumn drifts through September, Qingming shows up on 4 April in leap-adjacent years and 5 April otherwise, and has done for a century. It is also why no timezone argument can ever split it: there is one sun.

The Sunday problem, solved three ways

In 2026 the term falls on Sunday 5 April, and the four calendars split. Hong Kong gazettes “the day following Ching Ming Festival”, Monday 6 April — a whole holiday named after not being the festival. Macau simply takes the Sunday. Taiwan’s merged Children’s Day & Tomb-Sweeping block already runs Thursday to Monday regardless, and the mainland bridges Saturday to Monday with make-up workdays. Same Sunday, four governments, four gazette entries.

Overseas Chinese know it as Cheng Beng

In Malaysia and Singapore the same day is universally called Cheng Beng or Cheng Beng grave-sweeping, from Hokkien. It is a busy working week there rather than a public holiday — families take annual leave to visit columbaria in crowds — so those calendars do not appear in the table below, but the searches they generate land on this page anyway.

Frequently asked questions

What date is the Qingming Festival in 2026 and 2027?

Sunday 5 April 2026 and Monday 5 April 2027. In 2026 Hong Kong takes Monday 6 April instead, because the festival itself is a Sunday there.

Is Qingming always on 4 or 5 April?

Almost always — very occasionally 6 April in rare timezone edge cases elsewhere in the world, but for the four calendars here it is 4 April (as in 2025 and 2028) or 5 April (2026, 2027). It is a solar term, not a lunar date, so it tracks the sun rather than the moon.

Is Tomb-Sweeping Day the same holiday?

Yes. "Tomb-Sweeping Day" is the official English name Taiwan prints on its calendar; Hong Kong and Macau publish "Ching Ming Festival"; the mainland uses "Qingming Festival". One holiday, three gazette names — the table below keeps all three side by side.

Is Qingming a public holiday in Korea or Vietnam?

No. Korea’s equivalent, Hansik, shares the same solar-term ancestry but is not on the statutory holiday list; Vietnam’s Tết Thanh minh likewise passes without a day off. Only the four Chinese-speaking calendars gazette it.

Why does Hong Kong take the day after Qingming?

Only when Qingming itself is a Sunday. Hong Kong’s rule substitutes the following Monday so the day off is not lost to the weekend — in 2026 the gazetted holiday is “the day following Ching Ming Festival”, Monday 6 April. In a year like 2027, when the term falls on a Monday, Hong Kong takes the festival day itself.
