When Is the Dragon Boat Festival?

Dragon Boat Festival 2027 falls on Wednesday, June 9.

The Dragon Boat Festival sits on the fifth day of the fifth lunar month — races, sticky-rice zongzi, and a public holiday in exactly the four Chinese-speaking calendars this site carries. Each calls it something different: Duanwu on the mainland, Tuen Ng in Hong Kong, Tung Ng in Macau, and Dragon Boat Festival in Taiwan. All four sit on the same timezone, so the date never splits between them; what splits is the weekend rule, because Hong Kong moves a Sunday festival to Monday while Macau gazettes the Sunday itself.

Also known as: Duanwu Festival · Double Fifth · Tuen Ng Festival · Tung Ng Festival · 端午節

One festival, three romanisations

The English name depends on which government gazetted it. Hong Kong publishes its holidays in English using Cantonese romanisation, so 端午 becomes "Tuen Ng Festival". Macau’s official list kept an older Portuguese-era spelling, "Tung Ng". The mainland and Taiwan use the Mandarin pinyin "Duanwu" or translate the festival outright as "Dragon Boat Festival" — which is why the same holiday returns three different search results depending on where you look.

What happens when it lands on a Sunday

2028 is the live example: the festival falls on Sunday 28 May. Hong Kong shifts its holiday to Monday 29 May. Macau takes the Sunday itself and adds nothing. Taiwan bridges Saturday to Monday for a three-day weekend, and the mainland’s annual State Council notice decides separately whether to borrow a neighbouring weekend. Four calendars, one moon, four different answers to the same Sunday.

Japan celebrates the same day — two months earlier

Japan’s Children’s Day (こどもの日, 5 May) descends from the same Tango no Sekku that China observes on the lunar fifth — after 1948 Japan pinned its version to the fixed Gregorian date and re-aimed it at children rather than the river. So the festival survives in Japan as a national holiday, but on a date that has nothing to do with the lunar calendar; it never appears in the table below, because the two are genuinely different days.

Frequently asked questions

What date is the Dragon Boat Festival in 2026 and 2027?

Friday 19 June 2026 and Wednesday 9 June 2027. In 2025 it was Saturday 31 May, and in 2028 it falls on Sunday 28 May — which Hong Kong moves to Monday 29 May.

Which places take the Dragon Boat Festival off?

Mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan — the four Chinese-speaking calendars on this site. Singapore, Vietnam and South Korea all have strong Dragon Boat or Dano traditions, but none of them makes it a public holiday.

Is Tuen Ng Festival the same holiday?

Yes — "Tuen Ng" is simply the Cantonese romanisation of 端午, used in Hong Kong’s English gazette. Macau’s official list spells the same word "Tung Ng". Same lunar fifth day of the fifth month in all three.

Why does the date change every year?

It is fixed to the lunar calendar — the fifth day of the fifth lunar month — so against the Gregorian calendar it drifts through a four-week window between late May and late June.

Is the Dragon Boat Festival a holiday in Japan or Korea?

Not on this date. Japan celebrates the shared origin as Children’s Day on a fixed 5 May, and Korea’s Dano is a folk festival without a day off. Only the four Chinese-speaking calendars close offices on the lunar date itself.
