When Is Chuseok?
Chuseok 2026 falls on Friday, September 25.
Chuseok is the 15th day of the eighth lunar month — the same harvest moon that China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan celebrate as the Mid-Autumn Festival. South Korea is the only one of them that turns it into a three-day national holiday, and with the substitute-holiday rule a weekend collision can push the break to four or five days. It is the heaviest travel week of the Korean year.

Three days, and sometimes more
The statutory Chuseok holiday covers the day before, the day itself and the day after. Since 2014 Korea has applied a substitute-holiday rule: if any of the three lands on a Saturday or Sunday, the following working day is added. That is why the published break varies in length from year to year even though the lunar date is fixed.
Chuseok vs Mid-Autumn Festival
The astronomy is identical: every place in the table below is watching the same full moon. The printed date can still differ by a day, because Korea assigns the lunar month using KST while the Chinese-speaking calendars use CST — the same mechanism that separates Seollal from Chinese New Year in some years. What differs more visibly is the shape of the holiday. Hong Kong and Macau do not take the festival day off at all; they take the day *after* it, because the celebration happens at night. Taiwan and mainland China give the day itself, often bridged into a long weekend. Korea alone gives a block of three.
Travelling during Chuseok
Intercity rail sells out the moment reservations open, expressways run at walking pace on the first and last day, and Seoul empties out. Museums and palaces often stay open, but many small restaurants and shops close for the whole block. Booking domestic transport several weeks ahead is the norm, not caution.

Department stores and large chains usually close on the main day; palaces, museums and most tourist sites stay open and are often free. Small independent restaurants are the most likely to shut for the whole break.
Is Chuseok a public holiday outside Korea?+
Not under that name. The same lunar date is a public holiday in mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Macau as the Mid-Autumn Festival, though Hong Kong and Macau give the following day rather than the day itself.
