The dates here assume the Sat–Sun weekend used by most states. In Johor, Kedah, Kelantan and Terengganu the weekend is Fri–Sat, so replacements trigger differently and a "long weekend" may span Thursday–Saturday instead. On top of that, every state gazettes extra holidays — sultans’ birthdays, Thaipusam, Good Friday in Sabah and Sarawak, Gawai Dayak — which create additional local long weekends not shown here.
Under the Employment Act 1955, employees are entitled to 11 gazetted public holidays a year, five of which are compulsory for every employer: National Day, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong’s Birthday, the state Ruler’s or Yang di-Pertua Negeri’s birthday, Labour Day and Malaysia Day. Moon-sighting put 1 Syawal on Saturday March 21, so the festival ran March 21–22 with the Monday March 23 replacement — and because it landed on a Saturday, the Prime Minister triggered the standing gazette P.U.(B) 111 and declared Friday March 20 an extra public holiday. That makes it Mar 20–23, four days, in Peninsular Malaysia. Sabah and Sarawak followed their own state declarations.
