Vietnam’s Labor Code grants only eleven statutory holidays a year, one of the shortest lists in Asia — and yet the country produces some of the region’s longest breaks. The trick is the annual holiday arrangement, which the government issues around October to December: it stitches statutory days to adjacent weekends and, where necessary, schedules make-up Saturdays to pay for the bridge. On the provisional 2027 calendar five long weekends are visible, headlined by a seven-day Tết around February 5–11.

Tết: the break the whole calendar is built around
Lunar New Year’s Day is Saturday February 6, 2027. The Labor Code allocates five days to Tết, but the government almost always extends the block by attaching the weekends on either side and, in some years, swapping a working Saturday for a weekday. The provisional window here is February 5–11, seven days. Because day one falls on a Saturday, an extension is close to certain — the only question is which direction it grows, and that is decided in the official announcement expected in late 2026.
What Tết means in practice is a genuine national shutdown, not a holiday in the Western sense. Factories close, offices empty, and staff travel to their home provinces for a week or more; many small restaurants and shops stay shut for several days after the official holiday ends. Domestic flights and long-distance buses sell out weeks in advance and prices roughly double. If you have business in Vietnam, treat the whole first fortnight of February 2027 as unavailable.
Make-up Saturdays and the four other windows
Vietnam is one of the few countries outside China that uses make-up workdays: a Saturday is designated a working day so that a weekday can be added to a holiday block. The 2027 make-up schedule is not yet published — the source data carries an empty list — so if you are planning meetings with Vietnamese counterparts, confirm the Saturday schedule after the official announcement rather than assuming a normal week.
The other four windows are more predictable. New Year’s Day on Friday January 1 gives January 1–3. Reunification Day (Apr 30) and Labour Day (May 1) run together into April 30 – May 2 — the same window as Japan’s Golden Week, which makes it the busiest period on Japan–Vietnam routes. And National Day gives four days, September 2–5, because Vietnam has observed a second National Day holiday on September 3 since 2021.
