Taiwan Long Weekends 2027
Taiwan has nine long weekends in 2027 and 121 days off in total — and, for the second year running, not a single make-up Saturday. That last detail is the one most people get wrong. Taiwan used to run China-style 彈性放假, borrowing a Saturday to bridge a holiday to the weekend, but the 2026 and 2027 calendars published by the Directorate-General of Personnel Administration contain no make-up workdays at all. Every break below is a genuine addition, headlined by a seven-day Lunar New Year from February 4 to 10.

The substitution rule: Saturday moves back, Sunday moves forward
Taiwan’s current rule is close to Japan’s and nothing like mainland China’s. A holiday falling on a Saturday is observed on the Friday before; a holiday falling on a Sunday is observed on the Monday after. Nobody works a compensating weekend. In 2027 that produces most of the year’s long weekends: Peace Memorial Day (Sun Feb 28) observed Monday March 1, Labour Day (Sat May 1) observed Friday April 30, National Day (Sun Oct 10) observed Monday October 11, and Constitution Day (Sat Dec 25) observed Friday December 24.
The rule even reaches across the year boundary. New Year’s Day 2028 falls on Saturday January 1, so its holiday is pulled forward to Friday December 31, 2027 — giving a three-day break that starts in one year and finishes in the next. Note one payroll nuance: Labour Day is a holiday under the Labor Standards Act, so it applies to workers covered by that act rather than to civil servants, who work April 30 and May 1 as normal.
Three holidays came back, and three fall midweek
Taiwan’s 2027 calendar carries twelve public holidays, more than in recent years, because Teachers’ Day (Sep 28), Taiwan Retrocession Day (Oct 25) and Constitution Day (Dec 25) were restored as days off. Two of the three pay off immediately: Retrocession Day is a Monday, giving an October 23–25 break, and Constitution Day is a Saturday, pulled back to Friday December 24 for a December 24–26 break. Teachers’ Day lands on a Tuesday and stays a single day.
Two festivals fall awkwardly. The Dragon Boat Festival (Jun 9) and the Mid-Autumn Festival (Sep 15) are both Wednesdays in 2027, so each is an isolated day off with no bridge in either direction — in a year with make-up workdays these are exactly the days that would have been bridged. The compensation comes in early April: Children’s Day on Sunday April 4 is observed on Tuesday April 6 and Tomb-Sweeping Day falls on Monday April 5, stacking into a four-day break from April 3.
