New Zealand Regional Anniversary Days 2027

Summer and autumn: Wellington on Monday 25 January, Auckland and Nelson both on Monday 1 February, Taranaki on Monday 8 March, Otago on Monday 22 March and Southland on Tuesday 30 March.

Spring and early summer: South Canterbury on Monday 27 September, Hawke’s Bay on Friday 22 October, Marlborough on Monday 1 November, Canterbury on Friday 12 November, and both Westland and the Chatham Islands on Monday 29 November.

Southland is the biggest mover between years. Because it follows Easter Tuesday, it lands on 30 March in 2027 against 7 April in 2026 — a shift of more than a week driven entirely by the date of Easter, not by anything to do with Southland.

The Holidays Act 2003 lists the public holidays but does not generally fix their dates. Provincial anniversary days are observed locally by custom and practice and are usually prescribed by the regional or city council — and the “provinces” they refer to are the nineteenth-century provinces of New Zealand, not today’s districts or regions. That mismatch is why the boundaries can feel arbitrary.

The default rule is that an anniversary day moves to the Monday nearest the actual date. Several regions depart from it. Taranaki shifts to the second Monday in March to avoid Easter. Hawke’s Bay takes the Friday before Labour Day, and Marlborough the first Monday after it. Canterbury splits in two: the north and centre observe Christchurch Show Day, defined as the second Friday after the first Tuesday in November, while South Canterbury observes Dominion Day on the fourth Monday in September. Southland is normally on Easter Tuesday.

Two regions are genuinely loose. In Westland the observed day varies across the region, with Greymouth following the official date. Otago has no single clearly observed day at all, so Employment New Zealand advises the employee and employer to rely on the employment agreement or established custom, and to agree a day if neither settles it. Employment New Zealand also warns that its own published anniversary dates may contain unintentional errors and suggests confirming with your local council.

2027 is a heavy Mondayisation year on the national list. The day after New Year’s Day moves from Saturday 2 January to Monday 4 January, Waitangi Day from Saturday 6 February to Monday 8 February, Anzac Day from Sunday 25 April to Monday 26 April, Christmas Day from Saturday 25 December to Monday 27 December and Boxing Day from Sunday 26 December to Tuesday 28 December.

That has a knock-on effect worth planning around. Wellington’s anniversary on Monday 25 January comes two weeks after the Mondayised New Year break, and Waitangi Day’s Monday 8 February lands one week after Auckland and Nelson’s 1 February — so the Auckland and Nelson regions get Mondays off in consecutive weeks at the start of February.

Mondayisation itself does not touch anniversary days, which are already fixed on weekdays. It also is not automatic for every employee: for the New Year and Christmas holidays, whether the day moves depends on whether that employee would otherwise have worked the Saturday or Sunday in question.
