New Zealand Regional Anniversary Days 2026

Summer and autumn: Wellington on Monday 19 January, Auckland on Monday 26 January, Nelson on Monday 2 February, Taranaki on Monday 9 March, Otago on Monday 23 March and Southland on Tuesday 7 April.

Spring and early summer: South Canterbury on Monday 28 September, Hawke’s Bay on Friday 23 October, Marlborough on Monday 2 November, Canterbury on Friday 13 November, and both Westland and the Chatham Islands on Monday 30 November.

Notice how far the observed date can drift from the anniversary itself. Auckland’s actual anniversary is 29 January but is observed on the 26th; Hawke’s Bay’s is 1 November but is observed on 23 October; Canterbury’s is 16 December but is observed on 13 November. The observed date is the one that gives you the day off.

The Holidays Act 2003 lists the public holidays but does not generally fix their dates. Provincial anniversary days are observed locally by custom and practice and are usually prescribed by the regional or city council — and the “provinces” they refer to are the nineteenth-century provinces of New Zealand, not today’s districts or regions. That mismatch is why the boundaries can feel arbitrary.

The default rule is that an anniversary day moves to the Monday nearest the actual date. Several regions depart from it. Taranaki shifts to the second Monday in March to avoid Easter. Hawke’s Bay takes the Friday before Labour Day, and Marlborough the first Monday after it. Canterbury splits in two: the north and centre observe Christchurch Show Day, defined as the second Friday after the first Tuesday in November, while South Canterbury observes Dominion Day on the fourth Monday in September. Southland is normally on Easter Tuesday.

Two regions are genuinely loose. In Westland the observed day varies across the region, with Greymouth following the official date. Otago has no single clearly observed day at all, so Employment New Zealand advises the employee and employer to rely on the employment agreement or established custom, and to agree a day if neither settles it. Employment New Zealand also warns that its own published anniversary dates may contain unintentional errors and suggests confirming with your local council.

Mondayisation — the rule that moves a public holiday to the following Monday when it falls at the weekend — applies to New Year’s Day, the day after New Year’s Day, Waitangi Day, Anzac Day, Christmas Day and Boxing Day. In 2026 it produces two shifts on the national list: Anzac Day moves from Saturday 25 April to Monday 27 April, and Boxing Day from Saturday 26 December to Monday 28 December.

Anniversary days sit outside that rule because they are already placed on a weekday by design — mostly a Monday, with Hawke’s Bay and Canterbury on a Friday and Southland on a Tuesday. Note also that Mondayisation is not automatic for everyone: for New Year and Christmas period holidays it turns on whether the employee would otherwise have worked that Saturday or Sunday. Someone who normally works weekends keeps the holiday on the actual date.

Which anniversary day you get is a question for your employment agreement. Employers normally apply the day for the region where the employee works, but staff who work remotely, travel between regions or sit in a head office in another province are exactly the cases worth writing down explicitly.
