India Long Weekends 2027
India has a famously long holiday list and a famously short list of long weekends. The official 2027 central calendar yields seven windows of three days or more: Republic Day (Jan 23–26), Holi (Mar 20–23), Good Friday (Mar 26–28), Ram Navami into Mahavir Jayanti (Apr 15–19), Id-ul-Zuha (May 15–17), Buddha Purnima (May 20–23) and Diwali (Oct 29–31). Only three of them — Good Friday, Id-ul-Zuha and Diwali — cost nothing; the other four are built on a single well-placed day of leave. The reason is structural: most Indian holidays follow religious calendars and land wherever they land, and India has no substitute-holiday rule, so a festival that falls on a Sunday is simply lost.

No substitution rule: two national holidays vanish in 2027
India recognises three national holidays that every establishment, public or private, must close for: Republic Day (Jan 26), Independence Day (Aug 15) and Gandhi Jayanti (Oct 2). In 2027, Independence Day falls on a Sunday and Gandhi Jayanti on a Saturday. Because India has no Mondayisation or substitute-holiday mechanism, neither is moved and neither produces an extra day off. Only Republic Day survives as a weekday — a Tuesday, so one leave day on Monday January 25 buys a four-day break from January 23.
The same arithmetic thins out the rest of the year. Gazetted holidays are the days listed annually by the Department of Personnel and Training; central government offices close and most banks and public-sector undertakings follow. But because Hindu, Sikh, Jain, Buddhist and Christian festival dates are pinned to their own calendars, they scatter across all seven weekdays. In 2027 that leaves the seven windows above, of which one — Id-ul-Zuha — depends on moon sighting and could move by a day.
Restricted holidays: build your own long weekend
India’s under-used lever is the restricted holiday list — roughly 34 optional days from which a central government employee may take two per year. Because you choose the dates, the smart play is to spend them on a Monday or Friday adjacent to something else rather than on the festival you care about most. Many private employers copy the mechanism with a "floating holiday" or two, so it is worth asking HR how your company handles it.
One caveat that matters more in India than almost anywhere else: the gazetted list binds central government offices only. Each state and union territory publishes its own calendar, so Maharashtra adds Gudi Padwa and Ganesh Chaturthi, Tamil Nadu adds Pongal and Tamil New Year, and West Bengal treats Durga Puja as a multi-day shutdown that dwarfs anything on the central list. March is the standout: Holi (Tue Mar 23) and Good Friday (Fri Mar 26) sit in the same week, so taking Monday March 22 plus March 24–25 off links them into a nine-day run from March 20 to March 28. April is the best single-day trade of the year — one Friday off on April 16 bridges Ram Navami (Thu Apr 15) to Mahavir Jayanti (Mon Apr 19) for five days. Elsewhere, one leave day on Monday January 25 turns Republic Day into a four-day break (Jan 23–26).
