Seollal 2027

Seollal (설날), the Korean Lunar New Year, falls on Sunday 7 February 2027 — the Year of the Fire Goat. The three-day public holiday runs Saturday 6 February through Monday 8 February, and because New Year’s Day itself overlaps a Sunday, a substitute holiday is added on Tuesday 9 February. For most workers that makes a four-day break, 6–9 February.

Why there is a substitute holiday in 2027

South Korea’s substitute-holiday rule gives Seollal an in-lieu day whenever one of its three days overlaps a Sunday or another public holiday. In 2027, Lunar New Year’s Day itself (Feb 7) is a Sunday, so Tuesday 9 February is granted in substitution — unlike 2026, when the three days fell Mon–Wed and no substitute was added.

Expect the year’s heaviest travel rush: KTX trains, intercity buses and flights sell out weeks ahead, and many shops and restaurants close during the break. See our South Korea 2027 page for the full calendar, including the seven substitute holidays of 2027.
