How South Africa builds its long weekends
South Africa's public holidays are fixed by the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994 — the same dates recur every year, with Easter moving with the church calendar. One rule does the heavy lifting for long weekends: whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following Monday is also a public holiday. Saturday holidays get no substitute.
In 2025 that Sunday rule triggers once: Freedom Day falls on Sunday 27 April, so Monday 28 April is a public holiday too.
