Why 22 September 2026 is a holiday
Japanese law treats a weekday sandwiched between two national holidays as a holiday too — a “citizens’ holiday” (国民の休日). In 2026 that happens on Tuesday 22 September, between Respect for the Aged Day (21st) and the Autumnal Equinox (23rd). Together with the weekend of 19–20 September, that produces Silver Week.
Silver Week has only happened twice before — in 2009 and 2015 — so 2026 is just the third on record, and the first in 11 years. Expect heavy domestic travel and higher hotel prices in late September.
