Japan Silver Week 2026
Silver Week is a rare autumn long break in Japan. In 2026 it runs Saturday 19 September through Wednesday 23 September — five days off created when Respect for the Aged Day (Mon 21), a citizens’ holiday on Tue 22 and the Autumnal Equinox (Wed 23) bridge the preceding weekend.

5 daysSep 19 – 23
Sat–Wed: Respect for the Aged Day, the Sep 22 citizens’ holiday and the Autumnal Equinox line up for a rare 5-day break.
Why 22 September 2026 is a holiday
Japanese law treats a weekday sandwiched between two national holidays as a holiday too — a “citizens’ holiday” (国民の休日). In 2026 that happens on Tuesday 22 September, between Respect for the Aged Day (21st) and the Autumnal Equinox (23rd). Together with the weekend of 19–20 September, that produces Silver Week.
Silver Week only appears every five to six years. The previous ones were in 2009 and 2015, so 2026 is only the third on record — expect heavy domestic travel and higher hotel prices in late September.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a Silver Week in Japan in 2026?+
Yes. Silver Week 2026 runs from Saturday 19 September to Wednesday 23 September — five consecutive days off.
What are the Silver Week 2026 dates?+
The break is 19–23 September 2026. National holidays within it are Respect for the Aged Day (21 Sep), the citizens’ holiday (22 Sep) and the Autumnal Equinox (23 Sep), plus the weekend of 19–20 Sep.
Why is 22 September 2026 a holiday in Japan?+
Because it falls between two national holidays (21 and 23 September), Japanese law makes 22 September a citizens’ holiday — the bridge day that creates Silver Week.
Should I avoid travelling to Japan during Silver Week 2026?+
Expect crowds on Shinkansen routes, at airports and in popular onsen towns. Book transport and accommodation early, or plan around the week if you prefer quieter travel.
How does Silver Week 2026 compare to Golden Week?+
Both are multi-day breaks, but Golden Week (late April–early May) is annual and usually busier. Silver Week is rarer and falls in mild early-autumn weather — popular for domestic leaf-viewing trips.
When is the next Silver Week after 2026?+
Silver Week requires the Autumnal Equinox to fall on a Wednesday, with Respect for the Aged Day on the Monday before. After 2026, the next alignment is expected around 2032 — making this a once-in-six-years opportunity.
How many public holidays does Japan have in 2026?+
Japan has 17 national holidays in 2026 — one more than the usual 16 — because the Silver Week bridge holiday on Sep 22 (国民の休日) is added when a weekday falls between two national holidays.
How long is Golden Week in Japan in 2026?+
The core Golden Week break in 2026 is five days (May 2–6, Sat–Wed). Shōwa Day on April 29 sits just before, and taking April 30 and May 1 as leave extends the total to eight consecutive days off.
