Canada Long Weekends 2027

Counting federal statutory holidays alone, Canada gets six long weekends in 2027: New Year (Jan 1–3), Good Friday (Mar 26–28), Victoria Day (May 22–24), Labour Day (Sep 4–6), Thanksgiving (Oct 9–11) and a four-day Christmas run (Dec 25–28) built from substitute days on Monday Dec 27 and Tuesday Dec 28. But federal stat holidays only bind federally regulated employers, so the long weekends you actually get depend on your province — most workers add Family Day in February and the August Civic Holiday on top.

Federal or provincial: which list applies to you

Canada has no single national holiday list. The Canada Labour Code sets ten general (statutory) holidays, but they apply only to federally regulated workplaces — banks, airlines, railways, telecoms, interprovincial trucking and the federal public service. Everyone else follows the employment standards of their province or territory. That is why the answer to "is this a holiday in Canada" is so often "it depends".

The gap shows up in specific days. Remembrance Day (Thu Nov 11, 2027) and the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation (Thu Sep 30, 2027) are federal stat holidays but are not statutory in every province — Remembrance Day is not one in Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia or Manitoba. Boxing Day is a provincial statutory holiday only in Ontario. Both of those fall mid-week in 2027 anyway, so they do not change the long-weekend map even where they are observed.

The two long weekends your province adds

Family Day, on the third Monday of February — February 15, 2027 — turns February 13–15 into a three-day weekend in Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick. Manitoba runs the same Monday as Louis Riel Day and Nova Scotia as Heritage Day; Prince Edward Island has Islander Day. Quebec is the notable holdout, but it takes its own National Holiday on June 24 (a Thursday in 2027) instead.

The Civic Holiday on the first Monday of August — August 2, 2027 — gives a July 31 to August 2 long weekend in most of the country, under local names: Terry Fox Day in Manitoba, Natal Day in Nova Scotia, Heritage Day in Alberta, British Columbia Day, or simply "the August long weekend". It is not a statutory holiday everywhere, so pay entitlement varies even where the day off is customary. Add both and a typical provincial calendar has eight long weekends in 2027 rather than six.

Frequently asked questions

How many long weekends does Canada have in 2027?+

Six from federal statutory holidays: New Year (Jan 1–3), Good Friday (Mar 26–28), Victoria Day (May 22–24), Labour Day (Sep 4–6), Thanksgiving (Oct 9–11) and Christmas (Dec 25–28, four days). Most provinces add Family Day (Feb 13–15) and the August Civic Holiday (Jul 31 – Aug 2) for a total of eight.

What is the longest break in Canada in 2027?+

Christmas, at four days: Saturday December 25 to Tuesday December 28. Christmas Day falls on a Saturday and Boxing Day on a Sunday, so substitute days off are granted on Monday December 27 and Tuesday December 28.

When is the Victoria Day long weekend in 2027?+

May 22–24, 2027, with Victoria Day on Monday May 24 — the Monday preceding May 25. Canadians call it the "May long weekend" or "May two-four", and it marks the unofficial start of the summer season, so campgrounds and highways get busy.

Is Family Day a long weekend everywhere in Canada?+

No. It is a provincial holiday, not a federal one. Ontario, Alberta, Saskatchewan, British Columbia and New Brunswick observe Family Day on Monday February 15, 2027; Manitoba calls it Louis Riel Day and Nova Scotia Heritage Day. Quebec does not observe it at all, and federally regulated employees are not entitled to it.

Do Remembrance Day and Truth and Reconciliation Day create long weekends in 2027?+

No. Both fall on a Thursday in 2027 — the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on September 30 and Remembrance Day on November 11 — so neither touches a weekend. A single leave day on the Friday turns either into a four-day break where the day is observed.

How can I stretch the 2027 long weekends with vacation days?+

Year-end is the best trade: three days off on December 29, 30 and 31 join the four-day Christmas block to Sunday January 2 — nine days for three days of leave. Thanksgiving is the next best: take Tuesday to Friday October 12–15 and you get October 9–17, nine days for four.
