Each page holds the country’s full list of holiday windows and computes the answer when you open it: it takes today’s date in the country’s timezone and checks whether it falls inside any window. Nothing is pre-baked, so the answer is never stale — open the same page tomorrow and it will have moved on.

Because "today" is not the same calendar date everywhere at once. At 16:30 UTC it is still 1 January in London but already 2 January in Tokyo — a New Year’s holiday in Japan has ended while the British one is still running. Checking in the country’s own timezone is the only way the yes/no can be right at the edges of the day.

We currently track 37 countries and regions across Africa, Asia, Europe, North America, South America and Oceania — from China, Japan and Singapore to the United States, Germany, Brazil, South Africa and Australia. The full list is above, sorted alphabetically.

Every date is taken from an official government notice or gazette and cross-checked against a second independent source. The country year pages list their sources one by one, and provisional years are clearly marked until the government publishes the final arrangement.

Yes. Every country year page offers free ICS, CSV and PDF downloads. Import the ICS into Google, Apple or Outlook Calendar — or subscribe to its URL — and your calendar will show the same dates these pages check against, updating automatically if a government revises one.

Practically never. New Year’s Day on 1 January comes closest — almost every calendar we track marks it — but each country’s list is its own mix of national days, religious festivals and lunar dates, so any given day is a holiday somewhere and a working day almost everywhere else.
